Sanders wouldn't have beat Giants, Skins, or Cowboys as RB on the Bills, stop reaching.

And THURMAN did?????? FACT. THOMAS WAS bullshite IN THE SB in the last THREE. At least Barry would have shown up and given an effort.

With a team that returned Gundy, Hart Lee, a defense that improved greatly and 4 out of 5 starters.

Coaches didn't know what they had in Sanders until Thomas left. No great player has done great things without an opportunity - see Brady, Schaub (lesser degree), Turner, Romo, etc.

Some guys are given opportunities from the moment they go to a school or franchise, some have to wait until the guy ahead of them leaves, and other just have to wait until an injury occurs.

Knocking Faulk for the system he played in is stupid. As we have learned over the last 10 years, a Mike Martz system does not help RBs.

MF28 was the "Smartest" RB in NFL history. he truly knew the game and was an elite back. A rare combination of speed, vision and football savvy. This list isn't complete without him.

ISWYDT. Only from a leaving while healthy prespective. Sanders did the same BUT doesn't think he has to show how STUPID he is on ESPN.

Marshall Faulk absolutely should be on this list. I wasn't able to watch any of the older ones when they were playing but I can pretty easily say that LT, Marshall, and Barry Sanders are by far the best backs that I've seen in my lifetime.

Had he not retired so young, Sanders would have obliterated the record to where neither Emmitt nor anyone else would have ever touched it imo.
LT is the most complete back I've seen and was completely unstoppable in his prime. He had excellent vision, power, agility, speed...the works.

One that I haven't seen mentioned but I'll throw out there is Herschel Walker. He was and still is an absolute freak of nature. I know he didn't play his whole career in the NFL, so his stats suffer but he ranks near the top in most categories if you add his USFL and NFL numbers

Chuck Muncie and George Rogers would head up any list of top running backs with powder on their nose.

Woopy-do. If Emmitt Smith didn't age, he'd have set amazing records. See how I can pull a hypothetical out of my arse and run with it.

Barry Sanders quit on the Lions. He screwed them over and left them and their fans hanging. That drops him on my list.

You do realize that without Barry Sanders, the Lions organization would have never gone over 50% capacity in any game and probably would have had a couple of 0-16 seasons right?

Sanders was just as important to the Lions then as Brees and Brady are to their teams now.

I would put Dickerson in that list and replace Smith. I just think Eric was a better back. Sanders was good but I think if Simms would've stayed healthy, he would be considered Detroit's greatest RB, JMO.

ETA: I would replace Sanders with Thomas also.

So replace the #1 an #3 rushers of all time because they weren't as good as people who did not perform on their level during the same (or very similar) era?

Good point.

Either way, I would have a hard time leaving Marshall Faulk of my list.
