Good scenerio. And how about this...he used a different book or another method to bet against the Reds.
No way that possibility can be eliminated with all the lies he's spewed through the years.
Yeah you can't put anything past him at this point.

He is the greatest hitter to play the game
He bet on his own team to win. He was not tanking games.
Pete Rose deserves to be in the Hall of Fame over almost anyone on the ballot today

Of course out. I bet most of the people saying in are casual baseball fans at best. Imagine if there was a Pete Rose in SEC football. Let's say people found out Tyrann Mathieu or Johnny Manziel was betting on games involving their team while they played in college. I bet people on these boards would have a more radical reaction to those players.

Not even close.

Baseball is so fickle even if you're trying your best to control the score you really can't, at least not without being obvious. I mean I understand it was wrong to do, but to me betting on your team winning is much more forgivable than betting on them losing.

Incorrect you are. I am a die hard Cardinals fan. This is America. Rapist get 2nd chances. Murderers get 2nd chances. Drunks and drug addicts get 2nd chances. Wive/girlfriend beaters get 2nd chances. I am talking about athletes here not your normal everyday people. But they too get 2nd chances.
So a guy who bet on his team to win DOES NOT get a 2nd chance. What is wrong with that picture???

Out.
I could maybe understand the argument about him only betting on them to win IF he bet on them to win EVERY single game. That clearly didn't happen. Any game he isn't betting on is a signal to those taking his bets that they should bet against the Reds that day.
In addition, the rules clearly state that:
This rule is posted in every single clubhouse. Rose knew what he was doing was against the rules, and he did it anyway.

Pete Rose not being in the HoF is a complete joke.

That rule is posted right next to the domestic violence and drug rules( enhancing or recreational) in every locker room.
How many chances is Josh Hamiltion going to get? That bum is not half the player Pete Rose was.
Oh he lied about betting as a player. Only 10% of the players would still be in the league if we kicked every player who lied about something out of the league.
It is a double standard. Pete should be in for his accomplishments as a player
Posted on 6/23/15 at 1:39 pm to Vandyrone
The HoF is for achievements on the field not how you live your life off the field

Pete should be out for lacking the integrity to put baseball over financial gain. End of story.
Furthermore, the dude had YEARS to come clean about betting as a manager, and he arrogantly refused to do so. Then he finally gives in, admits to betting as a manager, but NEVER as a player. Oh wait, that was a lie as well.
You keep blabbing about second/third chances. Pete Rose has been given as many chances as he's needed to come 100% clean on this issue, and he STILL hasn't done so. Damn near 30 years worth of chances, and he still doesn't get it.

So by this standard can we take O.J. out of the HoF

Scenario: Up 4-2 in the 8th in a game he didn't bet. Instead of going to his closer (who he wants to save for tomorrow's game, a game he does plan on betting), he goes to a different reliever and he blows the lead and they lose 5-4. But hey, at least he's got his top guys lined up to go tomorrow as he looks to get out of the red for the week
One big problem with your scenario. He puts a different player in and he cannot get the save. Who says the reliever he saves for the next game comes in and gets the save?? A good reliever blows 5-7 saves a year. There are no guarantees with bullpens. 1987 the Reds closer was a 26 year old John Franco. 32 saves and a 8-5 record. He blew at least 13 saves or he would not have an 8-5 record. He did not start any games. Pitched in 68 games and a total of 82 innings. So there was no long relieve games for Mr. Franco. He was not yet the dominant closer he became.
