Patrick Ewing and the frozen envelope theory

I know this was the first tome the lottery was accused of being rigged. What exactly are they getting at with the "frozen envelope?" i googled it and still don't quite get it.

No matter how the ping pong balls really fell; Nola was frozen in the #1 spot

I'm talking about the 85 draft

They used envelopes so the theory is that stern put the nicks envelope in the freezer to make it cold to the touch. That way when he touched the envelope he knew it was the Knicks and picked it.

They wanted Patrick Ewing to go to the Knicks as he was the consensus #1 pick in the draft. Back then, they would actually use a random drawing for the spots with those envelopes. They have an unedited 1985 lottery on Youtube that shows the guy places all the envelopes gently in the thing except for one that he supposedly bends the envelope, that one being the Knicks. Stern looks down to draw the envelopes, sees the crease and feels the "cold envelope" that was supposedly also placed in the freezer and makes sure they get the top pick

Couldn't you make some ping pong balls lighter than others thus improving the chance one team is selected first?

That is an easy possibility as well. It's not like anyone goes through and weighs them all separately

They use "random" 4-digit combinations though, so this may not be possible.
Don't get me wrong I'm one of those NBA/Stern conspiracy theorists though. The 2002 West finals is what started it for me.

Agreed....didnt the Lakers shoot 27 free throws in that years Game 6?
That was proof enough for me as well....along with the Lebron draft lottery

Wasn't Cleveland the worst team that year anyway?
Good topic. I heard them bring this up on Mike & Mike and I've never heard of it.

Yeah they were, but some part of me thinks the NBA wanted to "guarantee" LBJ landed in Cleveland also

I usually think conspiracy theories are stupid, but the NBA draft lottery conspiracy is one I believe in, their is just to much evidence

Lebron going to his home state
Rose going to his home state when they had like a 3% chance
The Cavs getting the #1 pick after Lebron left
And yes my Grammar is terrible, a very relevant topic to bring up...
