After seeing Jaylon Smiths career go down the toilet, I completely understand it.

Sports is a business for the athlete and the team/school. Only people who don't get that is the hardcore fans.

Yep. Nothing to gain by playing in the meaningless bowl game.

it just makes no sense to your dumb, presumptive arse.

Its a valid question if you’re a guaranteed first rounder, particularly as a running back.

If you skip your entire junior year, you're not a guaranteed first rounder. Nothing is guaranteed.

You don't think Patrick Peterson is a first rounder if he only plays, say, 6 games and then quits in his junior season?

I have no idea. Maybe, but it's a hell of a chance. He'd be giving up millions of dollars. He damn sure wouldn't be a top 10 pick.

ETA: We're talking about skipping the entire season. Not playing 6 games and then stopping. That's a different hypo.

Most of the games are "so what?".

Oregon is in the equivalent of the cbi tournament of hoops.
3rd tier.

why not just quit in the middle of the season when you have been "eliminated from the playoffs"

Because sport is still about competition. If I am a professional coach I want players that have a high compete level and a desire to be the best. Players that hold themselves out or quit when the team is out of contention indicate to me that they don't have a high compete level. Will that same player quit on my team when we are having a poor season or are eliminated from the playoffs? I don't want players like that on my team.

He was a top 10 pick if healthy, and there is no way in hell he gets a second contract worth any sort of money.
