As a frequent visitor of the state, I am not a big fan of Salem
Your highlight must've been going to Applebees or Tony Roma's.
It's fine for visitors who think it seems okay...it has Willamette University and the Capitol building.
But the bars/restaurants are pitiful to non-existent and downtown is a shite-hole with absolutely nothing to do. West Salem is even worse over the river.
There's a reason people who work for the State/Gov. who are forced to be in Salem commute from Portland.

they live just north of that golf course and school once you cross the river.
That's the springhill area. I went to that middle school. That area is so much different now then it was 20 years ago, when I last lived there. It used to be farmland, strawberry fields, and xmas tree farms. Not anymore, it's your typical suburbia which to me has ruined what that area used to be. My house was on a block with 6 others. We were on a couple of acres and couldn't see any of our neighbors. Now there is 3 houses on that property and they removed all the fruit trees (about 8) and the row of raspberry bushes. As for Albany, it'll never be the same either. I have only stopped through a couple of times in the last 20 years. I typically just drive past it on I5....just like I do Salem. I lived in Salem for a year and I hated it from jump.

They practice on this field during the day?
So how much do they get sued the first time somebody passes out from heat exhaustion?
LA and Oregon have very different climates. It's a non issue in the pacific northwest.

From the article:
quote:
Four major sponsors — Les Schwab Tire Centers, Roth’s Fresh Markets, Meduri Farms and the West Salem Rotary Club — each gave major donations to the project and their logos have been sewn into the home sideline of the field, off the playing surface for all sports.
“I think given the economy the way it is, I think people realize now the ideal of having all the money we want in the public trough, if you will, is gone,” Sutherland said. “It’s a terrible economy, things are tough.
“We’re going to have to turn to advertising, that’s the way it is. All four of those are West Salem businesses.”
Yes, but easier said than done. If it was that simple then every high school in an area with successful and involved businesses would have sponsors throwing money at them. It just doesn't happen very often. Obviously this high school is fortunate, but that sort of thing isn't happening around here.
