That’s great. Too bad the city of Houston let the Oilers go.

These beautiful jerseys are a throwback to the Oilers of Tennessee, the state that welcomed the franchise when Houston wouldn’t

I like them.

Why are people mad? I don't recall the back story on the team's departure from Houston.

frick Bud Adams and his family

Couldn’t have said it better myself, and my NFL team is actually the Saints. But I’ll never forgive him for ruining the Astrodome with his football seating and then leaving.

Love the uniform, hate that Tennessee is wearing it. Like someone previously mentioned regarding Utah and the Jazz, it just doesn't work.

Bud Adams had long wanted a new domed stadium that could house the Oilers and the Rockets in downtown Houston. He offered up 25% of the cost to make it happen and Houston’s mayor initially agreed to it and then backtracked when the public wasn’t crazy about it. The Astrodome had been renovated in the 80’s but was still pretty dumpy compared to other NFL stadiums at the time and Bud felt that he had been misled after years of lobbying for it.

Bud started shopping the franchise to other cities, and everyone thought he was bluffing. He wasn’t.

It’s not a much different reason than why other NFL franchises have moved in the past. But the Houston Oilers became the Tennessee Oilers so this insistence from Texas people that the Oilers belong exclusively to Houston is just wrong. The Titans are the Oilers so it makes sense to wear the throwbacks.

There’s a blame on all sides for them moving. Keeping the name though was him being a spiteful a-hole (because that’s what he is). The Oilers name and identity has zero symbolism with Tennessee or their fans. You still regularly see people here wearing Oilers gear and it’s a part of the city’s culture. If he had left the name alone when he moved like Art Modell I don’t think people would care anymore. But he didn’t, and him and his entire family can get fricked

Would anyone honestly stay in Houston if Nashville was a viable option?

No.

It was always a temporary name while in Tennessee. The name doesn’t belong in Tennessee just like the Jazz don’t belong in Utah. Tennessee fans are such insecure pissy babies about this.

It makes no sense that a team called the Lakers are in Los Angeles but you don’t see people from Minneapolis bitching about it.

I literally don’t know anyone from Minneapolis so don’t know about that but that move also happened so long ago that there aren’t a ton of fans that were alive then. The oilers move happened much more recently in comparison. My first sports memories in person were going to an oilers game in the astrodome, good luck finding many people in Minneapolis that remember watching the lakers play there.

Also the Adam’s family purposefully do this with the oilers branding just to spite Houston and you can’t convince me otherwise. The exit from Houston was ugly because luv ya blue was such a part of the culture for so long.

When the Lakers moved to LA the NBA was a 2nd tier league, no one would care if the Houston Dynamo moved and kept the name. The Lakers were also only around for 10-15 years. Oilers were synonymous with Houston for 40. It was very short sighted the way Houston did the stadiums and yes Adams got kind of a raw deal though he was not blameless. That was 25 years ago now however and the family has already gotten 1 new stadium out of Nashville and is fleecing err getting Nashville to build a new stadium already. A couple years ago the idea was floating for the Texans to just wear the Columbia blue and the miserable c*nt owner wouldn’t allow it. This move is nothing but petty spite by that miserable bitch. Enjoy the colors Nashville but also remember as long the franchise is owner by they family it will always fail in the end.

Bud tried to keep the franchise in Houston. Houston said no.

Johnny Unitas was such a figure of pride for the city of Baltimore but you don’t see anyone demanding his legacy be tied to the Ravens.

He did get money from tax payers just a few years prior for renovations to the astrodome and then was asking for more. He threatened to move the team a few times trying to get money from the city and was successful with it. Eventually they called his bluff and he left.

Houston never wanted the oilers to leave and the oilers are still very much a part of the city of Houston every where you go. Heck, just a few days ago for 713 day the Astros released hats with all the different local teams colors and one of them is oilers colors.

Also while it makes more sense to call a team in Minnesota Lakers than LA, it’s still kind of generic. Jazz as an art form was born in New Orleans, the colors purple green and gold are the Mardi Gras colors. If they moved to New York or Montreal at least Jazz would make some sense frick it could pass in LA even. But Utah is just stupid far worse than Lakers or (trolley) Dodgers or Colts in Indy

You also keep trying to find comparisons that don’t fit the situation at all. Just stop, really at this point Houston fans don’t care that the team moved to Nashville anymore. We just wish the oilers name was still in Houston. Tennessee fans are so damn insecure that they can’t understand how this matters to Houston fans for a team that was in a city for 40 years.

That’s horseshite. He wanted a new stadium that he controlled since he was paying a lease to the Drayton McLane the Astros owner who owned the lease and naturally opposed it. Adams proposed a multi use stadium like the Alamodome (would have outdated in less than a decade) in East downtown for the Oilers and Rockets though he didn’t bother to check with the Rockets, who emphatically opposed it. Not coincidentally the site he wanted is where MMP stands today. It was pure politics, Adams was unpopular because he’s an arse so it was easy to make him call the bluff. The city screwed the pooch on that and once the Oilers were gone the Astros suddenly needed a new park The current setup makes way more sense, if only someone had the vision and at the time
