They eliminated a huge portion of the watering system. It's now what you call "single row irrigation"(one main line down center of fairway with heads angling off). Most courses in modern U.S. are double or triple(wall to wall). With what's happening with water restrictions throughout the U.S. this is the USGA's way of bringing costs down on maintenance and marketing it. It's good for the game and keeping golf affordable. Get used to seeing it.
