Just my opinion and may not even be close to truth but it looks like when Rory is #1 or everyone is talking about him again, he just stops practicing as hard. Tiger always had Jacks 18 majors to play for and for Sneads tourney record. Rory doesnt care about any of that.

I wonder if this will get as much backlash as Tiger did when he withdrew from The Players two years ago.

When Tiger withdrew, he ended up taking months off for his knee, didn't he? Contrary to popular opinion, he didn't W/D just because he was sucking. It remains to be seen if Rory has some sort of injury.

I definitely think he relaxed last spring after reaching #1. He started chasing his tennis girl around (can't really blame him there) and seemed to lose focus. I'm not sure what is going on now. But I was hard on Tiger for WD a couple years ago at the Players', so I can't really defend Rory here.

He will, and should, take some criticism here.

This is from the golfchannel.com story about Rory's W/D:

quote:

According to PGA Tour policy, any player who withdraws during a round must issue a medical reason. Officials are still attempting to determine McIlroy’s reason for his withdrawal.

I'm sure he'll come up with some sort of injury, and he may even be injured, but I hope he doesn't just blow them off and get disciplined by the tour for this.

Wow, a bad place mentally.

Rory definitely should take some heat for this.

Tiger withdrew with a neck injury

That was in the year before in the final round. In 2011, he withdrew after shooting 42 on the front 9 citing his knee and achilles that he hurt under the tree at Augusta. He didn't play again until Firestone in August.

quote:

Woods withdrew after shooting 42 on the front nine at the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass on Thursday, citing pain in his left leg that has plagued him intermittently throughout his career. "The knee acted up and then the Achilles followed after that, and then the calf started cramping up," said Woods, who triple-bogeyed the par-4 fourth hole and made three bogeys and no birdies. "Everything started getting tight, so it's just a whole chain reaction."

I agree. This is a pretty bad reflection on the #1 player in the world. The PGA Tour might get involved if it really is against policy to W/D in the middle of a round without an injury.

Maybe he shouldn't have said this.

Can he use mental fatigue as an excuse? Mickleson did last year but he did it after his round.

Tiger would get castrated by the media if he said that.

So if Tiger shoots +2, the #1 and #2 pretty much miss cuts 2 weeks in a row.
