re: OFFICIAL PSU-Sandusky Thread -- NYT reporting JoPa on way out soon

If it's true that JoePa refused to retire, it just goes to prove that he cares more about himself and his reputation than he does about the university he's always professed to love---just like he cared more about himself and his program than he cared about those kids.
It's way too late for him to help the kids, but if he truly loved Penn State he should separate from it---hold a press conference, accept responsibility for not going to the cops, and step down. Instead he'll be dragging it through more mud.
The whole thing is horrible. Everyone who knew and did nothing should go to jail. Period.

I've believed for years that joepa is selfish when it comes to his position. His team has underperformed for years and is run by coordinators. He's just a figurehead determined to die on the sidelines.

I hope this whole situation shines a national light on our collective responsibility as citizens no matter what our job or status may be to stand uP and take action when something doesn't seem right. We have a it's not my place to interfere mentality in this country that really bothers me. I hope when all the fish are fried here that awareness is raised to a very high level about this kind of abuse and our responsibility to be diligent against it.

I want to believe Paterno didn't know the gravity of the situation. I want to believe he's still the honorable (though maybe egotistical) guy I thought he was. But man, it isn't looking good. I think he knew since 1998 that Sandusky was into this stuff and that's why he was gone in 1999. To continue letting him use the showers and whatnot and have children alone with him is disgusting.

Awareness and education on responsibility in these type of situations is exactly what PSU should focus on supporting in the future to help redeem their university and rebuild there institution and athletic program.

As a parent, I want to ring the necks of parents that would let a 60 year old man take such an interest in their child that he showers them with gifts and travels with them. Instant red flags should go up if someone outside your family that is 60 wants to be best buds with your 10 year old boy...creepy.
Hopefully parents around the country take notice.

My guess is many of these kids were poor and had no fathers. Just a guess

This shite still happens in rich families with two parents. People are naive. A soccer coach in my city is facing sexual abuse allegations and the news hit last week.
I coach soccer in the next town over. My first question: how does a soccer coach get alone with your child (these are real young kids)?

No one really thought he'd up and retire did they? If so, then you fail to understand the size of this man's ego. It knows no bounds. They have worshipped him for so long there that he actually believes he is God at this point. Those kids tonight only reinforced that for him.

quote:I could not have walked into that shower area and simply turned and walked back out to call my dad. No way. All the GA had to do was announce his presence and call the cops from right where he stood. The pedophile thing could have been stopped right there. I could not have turned my back on that little kid and don't know how anyone could, including those who didn't witness it but were informed of the incident. They had no outrage and they had no souls, just threw the kid away and continued to treat Sandusky as one of the family. It's depressing that people can act this way.

People trust people, Sandusky was seen as a great person, coach, and of person of moral character by outsiders like the parents and even insiders like his players. I can't blame the parents, they are victims too in most of this.

This is one of the sickest and most disturbing things I have ever seen. EVERYONE involved should be fired and charged with at least a crime of omission.
Wasn't McQuerry 28 at the time that he saw the boy being raped in the shower? What grown man runs to his dad and does nothing to stop that while it is happening?!

Most people would have beaten the shite out of the old man, especially a former football player at 28 vs a 58 year old. At the very least, call the fricking cops.

They need to bring charges on everyone that knew and did not notify the police. ALOT of people are to blame for allowing this to go on so long. They all need to be prison raped.

He was told a 10 year old was raped by a grown man in his locker room. He reported to his AD and then did nothing else about it, while that rapist showed up to his practices and games, used the team's facilities and ran football camps for kids under the PSU flag.

That's just sad… I don't care what red tape there is, someone of JoePa's stature at the least could of made sure that Sandusky never touched foot on campus again. I would of made sure his arse was locked in prison for life. IMO molestation of a child is just as bad as murder and should be punishable by death.
It appears no one really cared that much about it. Sure seems like they all want to make sure their arse is covered right now though. Really fricked up and sad situation.
Anyone defending JoPa isn't thinking rationally. The man knew, the man did the minimum required to stop this thing it certainly appears. If something comes out to vindicate him, I will actually be relieved. What we know now, it's indefensible and anyone defending him is just being obstinate.

Sorry, but 30+ pages on child rape is too much to look through.
Does anyone have a link to a Penn State message board so I can ask them why they are marching for this guy?

Statement by The Pennsylvania State University Board of Trustees
Tuesday, November 8, 2011
The Board of Trustees of The Pennsylvania State University is outraged by the horrifying details contained in the Grand Jury Report. As parents, alumni and members of the Penn State Community, our hearts go out to all of those impacted by these terrible events, especially the tragedies involving children and their families. We cannot begin to express the combination of sorrow and anger that we feel about the allegations surrounding Jerry Sandusky. We hear those of you who feel betrayed and we want to assure all of you that the Board will take swift, decisive action.
At its regular meeting on Friday, November 11, 2011, the Board will appoint a Special Committee, members of which are currently being identified, to undertake a full and complete investigation of the circumstances that gave rise to the Grand Jury Report. This Special Committee will be commissioned to determine what failures occurred, who is responsible and what measures are necessary to insure that this never happens at our University again and that those responsible are held fully accountable. The Special Committee will have whatever resources are necessary to thoroughly fulfill its charge, including independent counsel and investigative teams, and there will be no restrictions placed on its scope or activities. Upon the completion of this investigation, a complete report will be presented at a future public session of the Board of Trustees.
Penn State has always strived for honesty, integrity and the highest moral standards in all of its programs. We will not tolerate any violation of these principles. We educate over 95,000 students every year and we take this responsibility very seriously. We are dedicated to protecting those who are placed in our care. We promise you that we are committed to restoring public trust in the University.
