This. That's just how it was. Then owners/trainers started sitting out races to prep for just one. That's why you see lots of horses win the first two, but not the last,longest race. The Belmont was supposed to be the last and most grueling to really separate great from good horses. 3 races in 5 weeks finishing with the Belmont is hard on horses that typically run once a month if that.

But the Belmont is set up as take on all comers race, always has been always will be. That is why you have seen horses train just for it. It is not like this is a new thing.
