I broke my six iron in half last summer on the same shot albeit I was in some deep thicket... I got it out to the fairway. That shaft died a hero

Tiger hit a shot standing next to a tree and it landed about 15 feet away on the green.

Tiger was next to a tree, 182 yards out. He hit a 9 iron, banged the shaft off the tree and landed it 5 feet from the pin. It rolled out, but still a ridiculous shot.

It makes sense. Your brain told you not to wrap the club around a tree and you decelerated. But you apparently had enough on it to split the shaft. I've done the same -- should've taken a drop.
