I think Alabama definitely had a case, but their media perception, past, and hype definitely helped get them in...Genro has even admitted this
I never tried not to admit it. It's not really debatable. Of course those things helped, at least a little bit.

I think what helped the most, though, was the simple fact that Alabama was believed to be a superior team than Okie State.

Les voting for us also helped.

But like I said, to say we ONLY got in because we are media darlings that the media has a biased hard-on for is false or at the very least, a vast oversimplification for seemingly bitter fans.

Media darlings, LSU. It's the hat baby. Bear had the hat, Les is got the hat. You can't beat the hat.

Well, in all fairness here, it wasn't prestigious Alabama against some mid-major non-AQ staring a bunch of nobodies. Okie St plays in a BCS conference, had a Heisman front runner, 2011 Bilitnikoff winner at wideout and were hanging tons of points on their opposition.
They had plenty of media hype of their own.

That is true but brand recognition did make a difference last season. If you remove the State and it's simply just Oklahoma, they're playing LSU for the national title.

1-loss UF got in over UNDEFEATED Utah. What if Utah was named Oklahoma?

See how retarded that sounds?

It sounds retarded because you are being retarded. If Utah was named Oklahoma, they would have been in a BCS conference and hence would have played a much better schedule than 2008 Utah did. Next Oklahoma was in the 2008 BCS CG as well. If USC had been undefeated, they would have been in over Florida and a lot of SEC fans would have whined because they don't play any body, but suddenly OK with the "eyeball" test once its all they can use to justify putting an SEC team in the CG. You are basically admitting that the name on the uniform is more important that what the teams actually do on the field.

You didn't want to play Bama again

Again, being the operative word. We beat you, your fans were crying because it was billed as a NC elimination game.

quote:

then you got whipped, and now you want someone to blame

I am making the same argument I made before the BCS pairings were announced. The only people I "blame" for the loss are LSU's players and coaches for playing a bad game and OSU's kicker for missing a chip shot FG.

To me, the outcome is what it is. To be a champion, you not only have to be great, but you have to win when it counts, in the clutch. IMHO, we could have beaten Bama 13 times straight and none of it would have mattered if Bama beat us the 14th time. Bama did that, and not only did they win, they absolutely erased us in all phases of the game. They deserve the crystal ball. I have a lot of Bama friends (including my boss). I don't give then shite for the way they got in because I don't believe it's relevant. Champions win championship games.

don't get me wrong, i agree with all of this... it just sucks the way it all played out.. however, if the situation was reversed, and bama beat lsu in the regular season but lost in the championship, we'd never hear the end of it

I dunno, a sooner team that starts the season #8 and loses to ISU...I think that voters would look at that team and look at Bama and say Bama was the better team.

do you not get that the 2 are related?

I'm sure Saban having OSU #4 helped as well. In all honesty, Miles, Saban and Gundy should not have been allowed to vote in the final poll.

your opinion... not a fact
Best scoring D
Best overall D
Best passing D
Best rushing D

If you're keeping track, that's every major team defense category. One of the very very few teams to ever do that. First team to do that in 26 years.

It's about as close to a fact as you can get.

True. Definitely for me, I know too many Bama fans

Yeah, it definitely sucks. It was painful to sit trough the whole game. I can't imagine how the players felt, especially on defense since we didn't play terribly on D.

But, new season, new team. And we're once again in a win-and-you're-in scenario so it's all good

before the NC, Bama's best resume builder was almost beating LSU at home (or "beating themselves" ) Their wins resume (again, prior to BCS) was really bad

quote:

LSU was 13-0, won the SEC, beat 7 teams with a winning record, including 4 that won 10 games, Alabama by contrast beat 3 winning teams, only 1 with 10 wins. I have long stated that I prefer the regular season to matter. When you can skate by on reputation and being in a certain conference, (never mind that we don't play every team in the conference each year) not even win that conference. Beat basically 1 really good team and get voted into the CG v a team that already beat you and played a much better schedule, that diminishes the regular season.

i don't really think it's fair to use bama's schedule against them when debating on whether or not they deserved to be in the title game... they were obviously in the top 2-3 teams in the NCAA last year, regardless of who they played

You won 7 games vs SEC teams, 5 of those teams were 6-6 or worse. Is that really a tough schedule? Again we resort to name and not actual accomplishments.

While I think it's premature to say ND is a title contender now, the Irish are trending up in a big way.

2014, the first year of the playoffs. You'll see Notre Dame in the mix then.

FML.

It's really sad. If it weren't for the media I really wouldn't have anything against the Irish. But thy make it so you just can't wait for them to lose.

Perhaps, but the thread title, says OVERRATED, Anti-SEC.

Bama/Saban are deserving of their praise. Not overrated.

It's like saying Michael Jordan is a media darling. Well, yeah. He deserves to be.
