My dad was in Vietnam and my mom knew little about baseball. So, she sent me to Little League tryouts where (1) I had never played baseball and (2) she gave me a toy vinyl glove, with "triple play" on it. It was a toy glove, unsuitable for baseball.

Thankfully, some young Marine gave me a decent glove to use and some lessons.

We didn't have baseball till the third grade. I didn't know how to play it at all. They stuck me in right field. My glove was flat as a pancake. I don't know if I'd ever even tried catching anything in it. Line drive came to me and I stuck my glove up and missed it ten feet. Everybody was screaming and I threw the ball in and cried. Thanks for reminding me of that.

I ended up being a pretty good ball player. Always batted second or third and played first or third. But with a glove that was oiled (3 in 1 oil) and well used. Coached dixie youth 20 years. Helping my grandsons now, gonna be good ballplayers.
