Oops, didn't think anyone else would be on the announcement

quote:

Since 25 years in racing, it has been my dream, my ‘one thing’ to become Formula One World Champion,” said Rosberg via social media. “Through the hard work, the pain, the sacrifices, this has been my target. And now I’ve made it.

“I have climbed my mountain, I am on the peak, so this feels right. My strongest emotion right now is deep gratitude to everybody who supported me to make that dream happen.”

I'm both surprised and disappointed.

I was looking forward to seeing if Rosberg could raise his game to new heights now that he no longer had the pressure of winning a WDC on his shoulders.

I'm not going to believe Rosberg is truly done until Mercedes announces a new driver.

I think he's definitely gone. He really wants to take the time to enjoy life with his family. Oh well Lewis is about to dominate

I think he is really gone too. Matches his persona to quit on the team and leave them in a pinch.

Surprises me to see him retire, but doesn't surprise me how he is going about it.

Not sure how I feel about this.

With that car, it's going to be Lewis or Nico that wins every year until the formula is changed. I guess I don't understand why someone would quit at their peak but good for him for being able to leave his way and not through injury or underperformance.

So who replaces him at Mercedes? Do they go hard after Verstappen to pair with Lewis? I'd pay good money to watch that petulant kid go after Lewis. He'd frick with him way more than Nico ever did.

Definitely gonna be an interesting few weeks to see how teams shake out with this news.

No way Red Bull gives away Max. That kid has got serious talent and will be a force for years.

I could see Alonso moving and making a final push for another WDC before retiring. He's wasting away at McLaren.

Yeah it was definitely more tongue in cheek. For all the Nico-Lewis shenanigans, I think Max would be hysterical there.

I've always liked Bottas but Williams really did him and Massa no favors with shite cars all year. Wonder if that season took some of the shine of Valtteri even though I'm thinking most of it wasn't his fault.

I could see Alonso making another run at glory which would leave McLaren with Vandoorne and ???. I think they'd do everything they can to keep Alonso on for at least another year or two.

Next year is a big change. I see Mercedes really fighting.

Does Button find a quick seat for one last year? Does Massa somehow get talked in to one more year?

I don't know all the other contracts, but it is really late to be doing some jumping around. Most drivers are locked up that had contract openings.

No surprise he retired, at least to me it isn't. Hamilton not happy he didn't win and it would have been hell on Mercedes next year. No way they get Verstappen, he'd destroy Hamilton and he won't allow that....they'll get a mid-tier guy to fill the role that won't get in Lewis's way. Would love to see Red Bull and Ferrari really competitive next year

2017 should have cars with more downforce which would decrease overtaking opportunities but it seems like overall, the cars will be quicker than this year.

I just think that the Mercedes power train package is just too strong to be beaten on the track.

Lewis should be in line for another WDC in 2017

Literally. He would probably make new meaning to Silver Arrows as he fricked up the entire field.

VES is a terrible driver. He overtakes with ease now because other drivers don't want to end up wrecked or dead because of his shenanigans.

I really did like him coming in to this year. When all the other drivers on the circuit come together and hold a meeting to confront VES you know he has issues.

He'll figure it out.

The kid is still really young but you can see the talent there. He has made some boneheaded moves this season and hearing Vettel bitch about him over the radio has been great but it's hard to deny the skill there.

He just walked away from $44 million over the next two years, wow.

The drivers are going to be fighting to the death for that seat. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a big name jump ship from a current drive to get in that car.

If I had to guess, after Red Bull royally screwing over Ricardo in Monaco, and a couple of other questionable decisions where they gave Max the 'better' strategy over him, I wouldn't be surprised if Ricardo jumps ship to Mercedes. (I think he only has one year left on his current deal anyways)

Alonso has already experienced life as Hamilton's teammate. That would be a shocker for him to sign up for that again.
