Cross checking happens often in front of the goal. It's the reaction of the opposing player that makes a lot of difference.

If they go down, often times it's called.

Similar to slashing. It happens way more often than called, but if a stick breaks and the player has the puck, it's called every time.

Nah Edmundson got devastated by a hit, guy led in with his elbow to edmundsons head, and sent him crashing to the boards. Edmundson got up, guy went through crease, Edmundson cross checked him, nothing more than a Normal everyday variety, Edmundson gets the penalty.

As a blues fan that miffs me after watching years of backed getting fricked up in front of the net against teams with it rarely being called

Wings should be officially eliminated from the playoff here in a few games.

Does the NHL page or any page use a "magic number" statistic to see the number to clinch, number to get eliminated? I know baseball uses this.

I don't know, but it's not hard to figure out on your own.

At a minimum, Detroit needs 15 more points to get to 78 points, putting them ahead of the Islanders. Detroit only has 14 games left. They almost have to win every remaining game to get back into the picture and hope every team in the wild card chase suddenly starts sucking even more.

As we get closer, NHL.com will have an article each day showing who can clinch or be eliminated each night and how.

Losing to the avalanche yikes

Fun fact: the avalanche have lost more games this season than Montreal did in 4 cup winning seasons combined in the 70s.

A bunch of big games tonight on the slate

PlayoffStatus.com gives the magic numbers to clinch every playoff spot for every team. And it also tells you what spot a team is eliminated from.

The Blue Jackets' magic number for the 8th spot is 4 games

Another cool site is sportclubstats.com.

This runs a simulation of 4.8 billion scenarios and shows the likelihood of each result based on record going forward. For instance, Columbus is most likely to go 9-4-1 over the last 14 and with that record they get the 1st seed 16% of the time, 2nd 60% of the time, and 3rd 24% of the time.

CBJ also has the second highest chance to win the President's Trophy at 20.2%.

Lots more cool stuff on there.

CBus must've hit a rough patch recently. Weren't they on a 16 game win streak not that long ago? How did they fall to fighting for 8th spot?

Columbus is 3rd in the league in points, and is challenging for the President's Trophy.

That's merely the magic number (number of games they must win) to guarantee a playoff spot (8th).

So they control their own destiny by winning 4 games, they're in, they don't need anyone to lose.

They have magic numbers for every playoff spot, but it would require them to go undefeated to control their own destiny for the President's Trophy. But the other teams likely wont go undefeated either.

They have the 2nd best odds to win the regular season title (President's Trophy).

Werenski just scored to shelf from below the dot on the left.

What a hell of a shot. Damn.

I feel like werenski's emergence has played a big part in taking you all to the next level

Along with Jones Bob and Atkinson of course but werenski is having a Calder trophy type year in a typical rookie class

Philly is strange. They blank Pittsburgh the other night and look bad tonight. Totally inconsistent.
