For whatever reason, I thought the Flames would have been able to stick around as a top team. They didn't fade away quickly, but they never won the Cup...which is asking alot, I know. Hell, I thought they were better than TB that year.
They were.

The terrible decisions made by the Suters is a constant source of irritation for me. Let's just say the Flames have not just failed to make good decisions to build on that team, they have made truly disastrous ones. In fact, every personnel move they made in the last 12 months has been bad - many have been catastrophic (outside of cutting Bertuzzi).

still need to upgrade from MAB and hammer time. gorges is good. gill will have to be servicable because i doubt we can replace him. Probably keep spacek, but who knows. again, if we cannot improve and build around the good core of playoff warriors gainey brought in with some size and grit and hands and some more defense we might as well go back to the drawing board and finally do what we should have done 10 years ago. scrap the team for picks and tank for 4 or 5 years then be a force through the draft.

What was the controversial call in that series? There was a goal counted for TB that crossed the line, or one that crossed for the Flames and was not allowed maybe? Either way, didn't that cost Calgary the Cup...maybe...or I am way off base here?

Compared to the Flames, the Orioles front office have been geniuses. Really.

The Habs are in a good place if they don't overreact to this run. but if it makes them think they are better than they are, they are in trouble.

I defer to my somewhat esteemed colleague Baloo?

Game 6. Martin Gelinas. 3rd period. Shot win in, Khabibulin pad dragged it back into play. Ruled no goal. No review. Replays showed it went in. Flames lost in OT.

Can't talk about it.

It's funny, because at that time I was really pulling for Dallas simply because of Texas ties...then I started dating a girl from Buffalo.

You can imagine how that went...between the Cup and the Cowboys-Bills Super Bowls.

I like how they changed the rule on the spot too...almost like the Tuck Rule for Brady's Pats against the Raiders.

It was a stupid rule, everyone knew it was a stupid rule, and they were so embarrased by the stupid rule, they didn't enforce it. Can you imagine going to replay after that goal and waiving it off because Hull had a toe in the crease that had no impact on the play?

remind me of that rule again....you were not allowed to be in the crease UNLESS you were skating in for a loose puck or were driving to the net or were shoved in by an opponent right? I believe you could not just park yourself inside the crease waiting for a pass or rebound, then the goal would be disallowed. that rule sucked regardless but is fuzzy right now.

Fantastic article, very insightful though the situation is very difficult to read with all the RFA's and UFA's.....

Hull in the crease didn't have an impact on the play. But at the time, I thought the rule was..."no being in the crease whatsoever."

Another example of the pussification of Gary B.
