quote:Don Cherry is fond of pointing out that 28/31 goals have been scored by N/A players...Ottawa's downfall IMHO has always been no heart, this really hasn't been Montreal's problem this playoff year...I think if Montreal goes ahead and loses back in Philla it will take about a week but you will realize how special this years team really was. The future certainly looks bright for Montreal....As a Leaf fan I respect your passion, anger and frustration but IMHO this team is just running out of gas....
Losing to the 18th place team in the league after beating the Capitals and the Penguins is still tough to swallow. It's not about losing it's how we lost. Nobody had the will to go to the net? There simply was no compete and it's not acceptable at home in a Conference final.
Sure it would hurt if we had lost in overtime, or if the score was 3-2 and we fired a ton of shots and competed but it would be more acceptable than to hand them a game on a platter in our building. We could hold our head up high and say it could have went either way. We didn't get the breaks. We got stoned by their goalie. But simply none of the above apply. We didn't get stoned as the guy only saw a handful of shots (PAY CLOSE ATTENTION dnswr). Anyone could have had a shutout yesterday. The three losses we don't score one goal? Is Pronger that good? I don't think so.
Cammalleri can not do it all. Neither can Gionta. We needed /need scoring from Andre Kostitskin, the guy we drafted ahead of CARTER, RICHARDS, Parise, Getzlaf. You know that game breaker? What the 4th overall pick we got for latendresse, mr. Poulliot? Where is he? A french canadien playing at home in the spot light, where is his compete?
There are many guys on this team I would not question. Cammalleri, Gionta, Gomez, Plekanecs, Lapierre, Moore, Pyatt, but I do question the work ethic of the Kostitskin brothers, Metroplolit can be much better(probably playing hurt), Moen is up and down, we need more big hits from him on their big players. Richards , Gagne, Briere are out their floating around. Richards is a predatator looking always for the opportunity to destroy somebody. Oh how I wish we had gotten him in the draft. he's a complete package.
On defense, I could not have asked for any more from Hal Gill who guts and determination were an inspiration for everyone else. Georges played very big as did Spacek. O'Byrne is still learning while Subban is a great player already.
Halak has/is outstanding while I appreciate Price being a team player down the stretch. That was good to see. Maturity maybe setting in for him and that will make him all the better.
So what's left for Monday. All I ask is to go out and leave it all on the ice. Play hard and compete. "And (like the lines from Rocky) if we lose? Then we lose with dignity and we lose knowing we gave it everything we had" Don't make this a what if situation.

Lucky to beat the Caps and Pens. Luck ran out. Simple as that. The Habs never really impressed me. They spent the entire playoffs in their own end in a friggin' bunker. The bunker eventually cracked. That's what happens when you play like that.
Halak could only play like Superman for so long.

If anyone cares, Ovie and Semin choked for the second time this month, as the Czechs just beat Russia 2-1 to win the IIHF Worlds. Sweden beat Germany earlier for the bronze.
Canada and the US sent over squads of developmental players and finished 6th and 13th, respectively.
Interesting that each of the "Big Six" countries won either an Olympic or World Championship medal this year.

It's not bitterness. It's just not trying to give Montreal these mythical powers everyone gave them. They play low percentage hockey, got away with it for awhile, and then crashed back to earth because they really weren't that good. they were just lucky for awhile. Luck still counts as a win, and it doesn't make their wins count less, it just means they were less likely to KEEP winning.
The Habs played no different versus the Flyers than they did earlier. They just stopped getting the bounces and having Halak play well beyond his ability. Habs fans should be thrilled they made it this far. But if they think they are only a step or two away from having a team that can consistently compete for Cups, they are in for a harsh reality.
Once again, I don't think Crosby has some magicl winning ability, he just has played on really good teams. Ovechkin doesn't lack the ability to win, he just has come up short. It's the same for LeBron, who I don't think lacks some magical quality. I think that is lazy analysis that people like because we like to view athletes as possessing some sort of mythic quality, but I don't think it's actually true. Crosby played one good shift in Vancouver and he gets lauded as the reason Canada won. Malkin wins the Conn Smythe and carries the Pens to the Cup and now people (ok, The Hockey News) are suggesting to trade Malkin.

They outskated no one. The Canadiens have posted two of the five worst Corsi's for a team who won their series in the entire history of the NHL. They sat in a bunker and prayed their goalie would bail them out and one or two of their shots went in. It's an awful, awful strategy (and one that is extremely bad to watch) which only works if your goalie is playing like Patrick Roy. As sonns as he merely played well, they were screwed.
They spent the last month back on their heels. They saw possession almost completely dominated by their opponent, and that's not good. They were thoroughly dominated in the flow of play in two series. Luck caught up with them.
shite, I watch this brand of hockey all year long. I'm a Flames fan. They play the exact same style and it drives me insane. It's bad hockey and it leads to losing. Hell, Kipper even had a very good year but since he wasn't absolutely fantastic, the Flames missed the playoffs. I'm intimately familiar with why giving up possession is a terrible idea.
