The NHL is now officially the first major professional sports league to gamble on Las Vegas.

On Wednesday, the NHL's board of governors approved expanding to this city, making the franchise the 31st team in the league.

The team will start play during the 2017-18 season.

Las Vegas will play its home games on the Vegas strip at T-Mobile Arena, an arena with a hockey capacity of 17,500 and compete in the Western Conference, which now has 15 teams compared to 16 in the East.

It's the first expansion in the NHL since the Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild started play during the 2000-01 season.

The approval of Las Vegas temporarily puts Quebec City's hopes of landing an NHL team on hold. Quebec City was the other city to go through the NHL's formal expansion process but ultimately the league decided to settle on just one franchise for now, keeping open the option of Quebec as a relocation destination for a current NHL team.

When Gretzky went to LA, you had Tom Cruise and Sly Stallone in the crowd.

Can't wait to see Chumlee and Wayne Newton at hockey games.

Surely there has to be another team added at some point. Maybe this bodes well for Seattle?

The Vegas people now have to pay 500 million franchise fee and have an arena completed I believe.

I'm not sure if it happens yet still. I have been skeptical but it seems a go so far.

the $500 million fee is a robbery.

I'd have declined on that account alone. This deal was done years ago. The new arena was built with the agreement in principle that a NHL team would be coming to Vegas by either expansion or the assumed move of the Phoenix franchise.

NHL has become less of a sport and more of simple money play by putting teams in cities where hockey has no roots.

Brand new 17,000+ arena right off the strip.

T-Mobile won naming rights. It's across from the MGM Grand behind the Monte Carlo.

Long term? No too many entertainment options and as soon as a scandal hits in betting in any sport it's over

I just hope to God that we can produce better "name the team" entries than the Zephyrs did. I suggested Las Vegas Scorpions. Maybe they could have these guys play there on Opening Night.

I'm skeptical as well, though they should always draw a lot of visiting fans.

Bettman said Quebec wasn't approved because of weak Canadian dollar and imbalance of conferences. Though Blue Jackets or Red Wings could move to Western Conference again.

Bettman is a liar
It wasn't approved because Montreal doesn't want a team in Quebec City. They'd rather it be in Hamilton or Halifax
