In a first for college football, the Grambling State and Southern football teams will be allowed to use coach-to-player communication during Saturday’s Bayou Classic at the Caesars Superdome after receiving a waiver from the NCAA.

It was announced Monday that the NCAA Football Rules Committee had approved the waiver, allowing a coach to speak directly to one player on the field who has a receiver in his helmet.

The NFL has used the practice for two decades, but has not been used in the NCAA because of costs and other operating logistics, the NCAA said in a Monday release.

Saturday’s game will amount to a test run on the college level.

I’d be all for it if it ended the stupid “check with me” offenses

If it prevents me from yelling at the screen five times per game when the opposing defense blatantly walks 7 guys down to the line of scrimmage for a blitz and the QB just stares at them and never changes the protection... Then I'm all for it.

So good OCs will dissect college defenses for the QB like McVay holding Goff's hand on steroids.

Don’t particularly love this idea. Gives an additional advantage to offenses I have to believe? Takes away from players being able to play

no reason it shouldnt already be part of the game

college should use everything the NFL uses

after all, its a damn prep school to go to the NFL

i think college should also go with 2 feet down rather then one as well. make the NFL and college the same game

It won't. The way it works in NFL is that the mic is cut off at a certain point on the play clock it isn't a live mic at all times

I hope the NFL is going to send some of their technicians with the equipment

This is going to lead to some pretty good lulz

Ain't happening, the coach's love to look like jackoffs, jumping around and having the back up qb's post signs that mean nothing.

And who would the offense stare at for 30 seconds, before running the play, that was originally called, even tho they did 150 hand signs, put up 3 poster board signs with hand signals, etc

It's beyond stupid.

Don’t be dense. Obviously the defense will be allowed the same benefit. Perhaps not in the GU-SU game, but surely if it were ever to be adapted to CFB as a whole

There are a couple misstatements in this thread. Trying to clear it up for you guys.

Once the play clock hits 15 seconds, the comms turn off.

Thus, teams will still check back with sideline.

It does help OC’s tell the QB - “look for X on this play. He has mismatch” when the college QB can’t read the whole field yet

It won’t be game changing like some might think. It just helps get the play in sooner with a little additional commentary.
