Choosing defense first can makes sense IF you have already committed that you are going TD or bust and going for 2 on that TD.
Basically, you are winning or losing with your team having the ball.
Other team started with a FG? We are not kicking one, we are going for the TD. Other team scores? We are going for 2.

No data is better than bad data
The data can probably be manipulated so possession 1 assumes "normal circumstances" (eg. punt when appropriate) and possession 2 can factor unusual variances (eg going on 4th in your own territory)

It's simple as this. In sports, the team that has the opportunity to score last has the advantage. Why do home teams bat in the bottom of the 9th?

At our SB gathering, I seemed to be the only one familiar with rules (which is fine, I wouldn’t expect casual fans to be on the up and up with OT playoff rules). That said, I immediately said SF screwed up taking the ball first. I also had to keep reminding them that if KC let the clock hit zero, they’d simply flip the field. It’s not like they would have lost.

I feel like sports has too many confounding variables to make decisions almost purely based on analytics. I think the analytics can definitely help and its a good tool but at a certain point you have to factor in the feel and flow of the game as well.
Dan Campbell needs to keep this in mind.

You take the ball first in OT. If you don’t, then you deserve to lose.
