Third party is already involved, and their bottom lines are being severely impacted. NFL and the networks are partners. Their goal is to maximize revenue. This BS is costing them money.
As for having to defend themselves... defend themselves from who and on what forum? Random fans on the internet? If the networks ignore the protests collectively, knowledge of the protests is going to lessen significantly. This thing blew up because it networks gave it airtime. Take the airtime away and the problem decreases in severity.
