re: Next year if the Warriors have to choose, who do they keep KD or Steph?

The league previously projected the 2017-18 cap to hit $107 million but lowered that number to $102 million Thursday and lowered the luxury tax line projection from $127 million to $122 million. This will affect teams' planning for 2017 free agency -- specifically the Warriors. Kevin Durant is signing a contract Thursday that will allow him to re-enter the market as a free agent next summer. Because the Warriors will not have his full rights at that time, they will have to create $33.5 million in cap space if Durant wants a new max contract.

Unless I'm missing something, in the NBA you can go over the cap if you are resigning your own players. So they shouldn't have to choose.

They don't have Durant's bird rights.
They should have enough room to sign them both anyways though.

Steph has been playing on a team friendly deal. I'd think he's ready to get paid.
ding ding ding
doesn't he make significantly less than Draymond and Klay? Steph gettin' like 12M a year, right?

HoopsHype shows them only committed to $34.2 mil for next season, so it seems like they can easily fit KD and Steph. Anyone know how much each of those 2 can command next season?
Depending on how much they'd get, they'd likely have to renounce the rights of almost all of their other players up for free agency to have room for KD, correct?

Yeah. This season Steph will get ~ $12mil, Green ~ $15mil and Klay ~ $16.5 mil

no one is saying steph is some great defender, but his ratings when he was guarding westbrook in the western finals were very good

Yea, Steph is gonna get max money. If there's anything we've all learned too, it's that guys you think will never make a move, will in fact make a move. Steph isn't gonna not get paid.

Wouldn't mind seeing Boston go after Klay.

It won't happen, but if Klay had to be moved and Westbrook signed with that team you have another instant championship contender.

and it isnt even close.
Why do people always have to come in an say shite like this
Of course it would be "close" when you're dealing with 2 top 3 players

Steph has been in the system longer, probably willing to take a more team friendly deal than KD. KD is probably the better player and can do more both offensively and defensively. They've both had some injury issues and KD is younger I believe.
This is like asking if the Yankee's should have traded Jeter if it was necessary to keep A-Rod.

Regardless of who you think is better, you have to pick steph in that senario everytime.

This. If its even close at all, you go with the guy who is the heart and soul of your franchise.

Steph because he is better than KD.

This is where people need to stop relying on statistics and just watch the game. Westbrook took a lot of unnecessarily bad shots. Not bad shots from Steph crowding him or being physical, but from Russ taking the first look he gets. His shot selection has always been his crux. Fact is, Westbrook can pretty much do what he wants against Curry. Durant essentially laughed at the notion that Steph was an underrated defender and said he likes Westbrook over Steph when matched up.
To answer the question, you take KD. Durant may not have Curry's flashiness and shooting, but he's a bigger mismatch on both ends of the floor come playoff time. You roll with that guy
