3rd and 3 from my childhood memory, but i could be mistaken. montana was cool beyond cool,
I looked it up. You're right. It was third and 3.
After the game, first Clark and then Montana said that it wasn't a throw away and that Clark was the second planned option in the back of the end zone if Dallas covered Freddie Soliman, who was the primary receiver on the play.
But that's what they're supposed to say. It was either a stupendous play by both Montana and Clark or one of the luckiest plays in nfl history. We may never know the real truth.

FWIW, if you watch the play from a regular TV viewpoint (instead of the NFL Films version which is what we see most of the time) it looks less like a desperation pass.

LSU losing to UAB - I suffered through that entire abomination.

FML and FY John Carney
Wouldn't they have made the playoffs if they won that game?

An interesting post. I always thought it was a planned pass, but in some of the views you see now, it makes it look like there's no way Montana could even see where he was throwing it.
(BTW, I grew up in Big D -- Dickinson, Texas.)

eah
That play would have been remembered as one the greatest plays in NFL history. I am glad the Saints cut him again.

Bears/Saints NFC CG.
The farther you get, the more it hurts when you lose.

The thing I remember most about that game (other than the bullcrap at the very end) was the 2 most clutch free throws in the history of basketball. With a couple of seconds left in the game, the US is down by 1. Doug Collins of the US is fouled - and goes to the line for a 1 and 1. If Collins misses the first free throw, the US looses its first baskerball game in Olympic history. But he steps up and hits both of them -- like it was no big deal.
Not only that, the officials set off the substitution horn during the second free throw. Think about that, Collins had the concentration as they were setting off a loud horn. I bet money there's no way they would have let him take the free throw over had he missed. Which makes the end of the game even worse.
THREE CHANCES?!

1. Super Bowl XXIII-Montana to Taylor fricks my arse with 39 seconds left.
2. 1999 Wild Card playoff game-Al Leiter and the Mets beat the Reds 5-0.

2001 Tennessee vs LSU - John Chavis becomes absolutely hypnotized by the impossible-to-stop, mythical QB draw. The beginning of the end for Prince Phillip of Peach Bowls and his merry band of clowns
2001 Colorado vs Fresno State - Gary Barnett refuses to kick a field goal, ultimately costing Colorado a shot at the national championship
Those are the two that come straight to mind.
