Can someone do some research on the minor leaguers the Astros got in return?

Just a quick search, but none of them are in Keith Law's top 100.

I'd rather have Sanchez, personally.

Nice reclamation project for the Rocks.

The three minor leaguers the Astros got are nothing special.

Not among the Jays top ten prospects.

Woj and Musgrove both have fairly decent upside considering what little they had to give up, especially Musgrove.

I'm sure you'd like them a lot more if they played for the Pirates.

Actually, Perez is No. 8 and Wojciechowski is No. 10 according to MLB.com's rankings.

Carlos Perez, C (No. 8)

The Blue Jays signed Perez out of Venezuela back in 2008 and he began his pro career extremely well, showing an ability to hit for average and get on base in the Dominican Summer League, the Gulf Coast League and the New-York Penn League in his first three summers. In 2011, he hit a bit of a bump during his first taste of full-season ball, hitting just .256/.320/.355. He's spent the year back in Lansing and the Midwest League and he's shown some improvement, hitting .275/.358/.447 at the time of the trade. He's athletic and runs well for a catcher. He also has excellent arm strength, which has allowed him to throw out 33 percent of would-be basestealers at this point of his career. Still just 21, he has time to develop into a solid every-day all-around catcher.

Asher Wojciechowski, RHP (No. 10)

The supplemental first-round pick from the 2010 Draft had an up-and-down first full season in 2011, so he repeated the Florida State League in 2012. So far, he's seen much better results, sitting 11th in the FSL with his 3.57 ERA at the time of the trade. The Citadel product has a three-pitch mix, which could allow him to be an impact starter in the future. He struggled with his fastball in 2011, but it's been a plus pitch in the past. His slider is another above-average offering for the right-hander. His changeup, which he didn't use in college, has come a long way in his time as a professional. Very aggressive on the mound, he still has the chance to be a workhorse near the top of a rotation. If that doesn't work out, he has the power stuff and the mentality to pitch well in the back of a bullpen.

Joe Musgrove, RHP (No. 11)

One of many high-ceiling high school arms the Blue Jays drafted in 2011, Musgrove is a big right-hander (6-foot-5, 230 pounds) who was just getting his pro career started. He had thrown twice for Bluefield in the rookie-level Appalachian League, but hasn't pitched since June 24 due to shoulder soreness. It's not expected to be a long-term concern. He has a hard, sinking fastball that generates a ton of ground balls. He has a power curve that's a good second pitch and has used a splitter as an offspeed pitch. As long as he keeps throwing strikes, something he's done in his brief time as a pro, he has every chance to develop into a big, strong, workhorse type starting pitcher. When all is said and done, he might be the best prospect in this deal.

That's a good point.

Plus, Coors is pitcher's hell. Just look at the wonders it's done Ubaldo's career to get out of there... oh wait.

Looks like the Nats are trying to get in on Dempster. That's just what the Cubs wanted I'd imagine, some competition to up the prospect return.

Dempster's value is pretty high already with the way he has been pitching all season...with another good start tonight against the cardinals and all of these teams trying hard to make a push to land him, cubs could end up getting a pretty highly rated pitching prospect. I don't think they will make a deal unless its worth their while.

I am a Cubs fan so if we can get a highly touted arm then

Greinke needs to just sign that contract extension the Brewers are supposedly offering.. He already feels comfortable there..

The funny thing with Dempster is he literally is the ideal 1 year rental who probably just re-signs right back with the Cubs in the off-season. I would love to see the Braves get him for a season while the other guys get healthy..

Gimme Gutherie, he has proven he can pitch in AL against East. He will give you 200+ innings and would think getting away from Coors his ERA gets closer to career avg which is serviceable.

shite, it's possible he could pitch three scoreless and the trade go down and they pull him. It's happened before.

Here is an article by Jonah Keri on the Jays-Astros trade.
LINK
quote:

Meanwhile, the Astros did exactly what the worst team in baseball should be doing: acquiring as many pitchers with any kind of upside as possible, and hoping they hit the lottery with one or two of them.

quote:

This looks like something of a hedge trade, an effort to make the team marginally better and keep the Jays on the edges of a playoff hunt, without selling any stud prospects to do it. But the opportunity cost here was too great. The Jays didn't necessarily give up a ton, with no one considered an elite prospect switching teams. But there's value in prospect depth, and Toronto just burned a good chunk of it to make a trade that isn't likely to make them significantly better, now or later. Moreover, you have to imagine they burned a fair number of man hours constructing a 10-player trade, hours that could have been used on more productive ventures.

Differs may be out on Dempster, but could be thinking more on Garza. Braves, Nate and Tigers still keeping tabs on Dempster.

Per Rosenthal.
