ESPN: Agents/Players Butthurt About Slow Market
I know its ESPN so you already feel the stench radiating off of the writing but its a joke that agents/players are getting upset about a team not wanting to sign them for more than they are worth. Owners finally wising up about dishing out a contract that will have no value in the later stages of a guys career (Pujols, Kemp, Mauer are just a few examples)
Whats the solution? Players shouldn't be under team control as long as they are so they can enter free agency in their "prime"?
quote:
A prominent Major League Baseball agent said Friday that a "fight is brewing" over the lack of free-agent activity in the game this offseason, and said a spring training boycott might be on the horizon if teams don't begin signing players soon.
Agent Brodie Van Wagenen of Creative Artists Agency stopped short of using the word "collusion" but said the behavior of owners "feels coordinated, rightly or wrongly." "There is a rising tide among players for radical change," Van Wagenen said in a Twitter post Friday. "A fight is brewing. And it may begin with one, maybe two, and perhaps 1,200 willing to follow. A boycott of spring training may be a starting point, if behavior doesn't change.
"Bottom line, the players are upset. No, they are outraged. Players in the midst of long-term contracts are as frustrated as those still seeking employment. Their voices are getting louder and they are uniting in a way not seen since 1994."
"Many club presidents and general managers with whom we negotiate are frustrated with the lack of funds to sign the plethora of good players still available, raising further suspicion of institutional influence over the spending," Van Wagenen said in his statement. "Even the algorithms that have helped determine player salaries in recent years are suggesting dramatically higher values than owners are willing to spend."

The problem is the CBA artificially suppresses salaries for young, productive team-controlled guys in order to overpay aging veterans, but teams have wised up towards not overpaying those veterans now. Especially with the tax and next year’s monster class.

Looks like the owners formed their own union.

This isn't collusion. This is GMs becoming incredibly efficient. It. Comes from. Owners listening to their top baseball people. It comes as an artifact of the last labor agreement.
I love the current model because it allows smaller market teams keep their star players for 6 years instead of having them become Yankees or Dodgers in 3.
That needs to be protected. I think some changes need to be made to the model to allow teams to resign their own players without luxury tax implications. I also think they can invoke arbitration after the first 3 seasons.

quote:i think a big part of it is that the lower 15 tv markets who get regional tv money from everyone need stricter rules on plugging that money back into baseball operations

i am fine with a team like the marlins getting a part of the dodgers local tv money. it helps keep those team competitive. but its ridiculous that they get a portion of the dodgers money and then absolutely slash pay roll because "they cant afford the team" when they make the total team salary on their own local tv revenue and revenue sharing alone

I have been complaining about that for years. At some point, if an owner refuses to field a decent team and utilize his welfare on actual baseball operations; they should be forced to sell.

MLB has always had good young talent. This isn’t anything new.

I’m sure a lot of teams would be willing to sign these ‘unemployed’ fellas, but who’s being unreasonable about the contract?

The entitlement of athletes is ridiculous.
It's like they don't understand they are entertainers.

So much bullshite here
On top of that I'm sure an attempted spring training boycott would work flawlessly
