What about gloves? Also, i don't know of anyone that just gets a random stick to hit a baseball

Stickball has been played in urban areas for over 100 years with broomsticks, chalk and no gloves.

Dude, baseball is very popular in Latin America. You need to drop the argument that baseball is too expensive due to the equipment requirements.

You want to do the same analysis for football?
Yes it is, but you do realize that they are basically a farm system for the MLB and that the MLB sponsors alot of the baseball in Latin America, right? The MLB doesn't market to the black community. The NBA does though and so does the NFL. Nike and Under Amour are a big part of this, but baseball really isn't our sport.

I can't believe you are still badgering about this. Baseball just isn't big in the black community. Just let it go.

All those poor kids in Cuba and central America playing baseball with equipment provided by the MLB. They wouldn't be able to overcome the financial burden of a bat, ball and glove without that assistance.

Too expensive, my arse.

Badgering? I called you out for the asinine statement that baseball is too expensive. For some reason, you can't admit that you were wrong.

Don't move the goalposts.

ETA: Let's move past the obviously horseshite argument that baseball is too expensive. What do you think the reason for baseball's lack of popularity with black people is?

Not saying that at all. It is obvious that baseball is the 2nd most popular sport in Latin America, but they have a what is considered a one race demographic. America isn't quite the same. Anybody with eyes sees that America markets different things to different demographics because we have so many different ones. The vast majority of black kids growing up play basketball and football. It isn't rocket science. If you take away football they will go to basketball 7 out of 10 times.

You don't need a glove to play baseball in the streets.

Hell, when I was a kid we didn't use gloves half the time and we intentionally played with a tennis ball just so we can feel like Frank Thomas and crushing the ball.

Name me all the people you know that use a crate and board for a hoop like you posted?

Growing up we had gloves, but we'd downgrade the baseball to a tennis ball so we could play defense with just hands. It actually was really helpful. If you can field a tennis ball with your bare hands, fielding a baseball with a glove is a breeze. So, back in the early 2000s, an 88 cent can of tennis balls and a crappy thrift store bat got the job done.

Like I said, it is too expensive for some. Take the average black kid living in the projects or a very urban area. Chances are there is a park near by with a hoop. All that kid needs is a ball and friends and he has a full day of playing basketball. It isn't that simple with baseball. Baseball bats are expensive as hell and so are gloves. You can get a good basketball for under $30. Which one do you think a mother of these kids are going to choose?

A big part of that choice also goes into the marketing of the sports. When you turn on baseball you don't see a whole lot of blacks. There aren't any big time baseball players with shoe contracts, but there are plenty basketball players with them and all of them are black. Basketball is marketed to blacks on a daily basis without them even trying to really.

You want to go to my hometown? Go to any low income area and you'll find at least one hoop that looks like this.

Youth gloves are cheap and can be passed down. You only need one bat and those can also be passed down.

You need to drop that silly argument.

Bingo, I think this was more popular than that poster realizes.

So you didn't name anyone, ok.

But we know just from this thread a few guys talking about playing baseball with just a stick and any kind of ball, so...

He's being incredibly disingenuous. For some reason, he can't see how silly his argument is.

ETA: I mean, he's arguing that baseball is too expensive while ignoring the fact that baseball is huge in the poverty stricken countries of Latin America. Doesn't make a lick of sense.

Is it popular in black communities? That is the basis of the topic. We played a little baseball when I was a kid, but we played basketball and football all the time. Baseball just wasn't that popular from my experiences.

I don't know. But if not, it's not because it's too expensive.

Unless you think these Cuban players all grew up in a lap of riches when they played baseball as kids.
