I don’t see how staying with the Angels somehow makes him a worse baseball player. You can criticize him for it, it’s not what I would have done, but it’s completely independent of what he’s done and how he’s performed on a baseball field

Winning and availability should still mean something
How the frick is a single position player on a team of crap supposed to carry them to victory? Pitching around a single star is easy (see: walk totals). Do you think he comes up with based juiced every AB and just blows it?

fricking retarded

You can go to another team when you know yours is an unserious franchise who doesn’t and has never really cared about winning.

Sorry Charlie, but the last few years will count against him. As of right now there are quite a few players that have better stats that aren’t in.

No one would have blamed trout for leaving Anaheim and you know that. Don’t be dishonest.

There’s a difference between going to a team you blew a lead to in the conference finals and leaving a bad organization, which again, you know

Getting more than one career playoff hit would be a good start

I said his injury history should be considered in my very first post, so not at all.

Being available is important. You may be great when you’re on the field, but if you can’t stay on the field what does it mean?

I’m not saying the guy sucks, but saying he should get 98% plus on his first ballot if wrong, in my opinion.

I understand the value of advance metrics, counting stats are bad at measuring performance, but there’s more to baseball than WAR, not matter how bad the nerds don’t want it to be. And if that’s all that matters, just make a WAR line criteria for induction and continue to make the game worse.

I mean the guy is going to end up with the same amount of hits as Brandon Phillips and Raul Ibanez, and some people talk about him like he’s an all time great. My personal opnion is you have to play to be an all time great.

Mike Trout:

CLUTCH SLASH-LINE STATS (Career):

BA /OBP / SLG

.262/.451/.445 (2 outs, RISP)

247/.406 /.463 (Late & Close)

Meh.

Evidence suggests for all his gaudy numbers Mike Trout has not risen to the occasion much when it's counted.

So .a 247 CAREER BA (Late & Close) is acceptable for a so-called "first time HOF'er?

Alrighty then. (with all due respect to Lyle Overbay)

People with a brain can both use numbers and their eyes to judge performance. Just like it’s not all about rings, it’s not all about WAR

thinking someone with almost an 870 OPS in the dumb arbitrary scenario you created isnt getting it done

Zackly.

WAR is one of those Bill James contrived stat metrics that has distorted player value since he invented them.

OTOH, Clutch Late & Close and RISP w/2Outs when everything is on the line says a lot more about a ballplayer with the raw gaudy power numbers of a Mike Trout (Trout comes up very short by those legit metrics, see above)

That .870 OPS is distorted by Trout's BBs (when Late & Close AND w/2 outs you desperately need a HIT from your clean-up hitter)

Sorry man. Mike Trout is a great fielder, great hitter; Just not a guy who hits and wins games when it counts.
