At first, as an LSU alum and fan, McNeese and other Southland schools moving to FBS seems nuts. They can't compete.
But... if there's truth to the rumor that the P4 (especially the SEC and Big 10) are going to move to a new higher level, then it makes sense. Stay a tier below the big dogs; hell the entire Southland could move up a step and compete as a conference, with the Sun Belt, AAC, CUSA, MWC etc.
It makes for a better fit than staying at the SWAC tier.

???? If they had the money… Southland is glorified 6A ball

Not for a high school stadium
It was so bad when I was there and they were actually good. I’m pretty impressed with the effort to improve the campus and sports facilities. The stadium doesn’t need to be bigger but it’s a lot more athletically pleasing and the training facilities and locker rooms have improved significantly.

The gap between the Sun Belt and Southland is probably narrower than the gap between the Sun Belt and the SEC. If the SEC and other P4 conferences move up a tier, then the Sun Belt actually becomes one of the big conferences at their current tier; and they will need teams to play against. Sure, you have the MAC, MWC, CUSA, AAC all about the same level, but the Southland gives you cannon fodder for early season games and such. Think what the Sun Belt is for the SEC. And getting McNeese, Nicholls, Southeastern etc is more interesting for your general fanbase, because yall know each other, as compared to other random filler games.
Think bigger picture- the P4 will probably demand only games against each other so nobody stacks wins, going to basically an NFL Lite format. That cuts the smaller FBS teams out, so they will need to find new teams to schedule. That also makes Boise the new Oregon in that tier, Tulane the new Bama or LSU, etc. They'll have their own playoff system because bowls don't cut it... or maybe not. But I suspect they will. And the Southland would be the new Sun Belt in that type of format, hoping they might be able to get 1 Cinderella into the mix.

I envision SEC and big 10 breaking off and taking a few more teams with them. It’ll be 48ish or so I imagine.
The rest of the FBS pulls in some of the larger fcs to try and do some sort of combo of the old ncaa with the new playoff.

Hell no.
ETA: as much as I love ULM I’m also realistically critical of them. We wax the floor with everyone in that shite conference.

ULM would have to cut a few more sports if they dropped to fcs. Stop kidding. It's not happening.

Get fricked
I just stood up for ULM.
But yeah If Gumby is still the head coach of tech next season. I'll be cheering to Tech but I'll be wanting ULM to beat the piss out of tech.
Crumbie is a very unlikable and terrible human.
