I think on the MSB people want to ignore/forget the bad side of his life, especially so close to his death. It will always be part of his story.
Kobe’s death shows me that you can spend 99% of your adult life being a spoiled, selfish, insufferable, miserable a-hole, terrible teammate with no friends, called uncoachable by possibly the greatest coach ever, ruin a dynasty because of your ego, cheat on your wife and possibly rape someone, and still have people call you a hero, want to name a building after you, want to retire your number for the entire league, and want to make you the logo of the league.
Before anyone wants to jump down my throat for disrespecting this great man, all of the stuff I mentioned was said about him by the people who followed his life and career the closest. It’s not just me stating my opinion about the guy. Let’s also not forget all the credit he got for deciding to become a great dad and family man after he retired. What a guy.
What got me the most was all these athletes and celebrities tweeting about Kobe, only a very small percentage even bothered to mention the others that were on that helicopter.

I mean... you may get downvoted to hell, but I mostly agree. However, in the immediate aftermath of a death, one tends to stray from all the negative because the person who died is the individual who was living at the time and not the individual of the past. Plenty of time to talk about Kobe as a person and several have mentioned it including JA Adonday.
That said, it is a shame how comparably little three young ladies dying is brought up compared to a grown man. That’s three lives of untapped and unfulfilled potential.

Our culture really looks down on saying negatives about someone who recently died. It’s just a cultural norm and nothing more. I agree with your premise.

So what you're looking for is either the news to not cover Kobe any more than the 3 kids, or cover the 3 kids just as much as Kobe?
Neither of those are particularly logical.

Did Kobe play for Dallas?
This looks like they are trying too hard.
