Apologies if already posted. It looks like this happened earlier today and I didn't see any threads on it.

Apparently it counts as a dead ball since the ball wasn't initially secured with either hand, so the batter is awarded a single. I guess that makes the ole' catching a pop fly with the hat a not terribly useful decision.

If you can't watch the video, the pitcher didn't do anything on purpose. The ball hauled arse towards his chest and somehow made it between his shirt buttons. Maybe the most improbable play I've ever seen outside of Randy Johnson rightfully murdering that bird that dared get in his way.

I’ll be honest, didn’t realize that you can’t legally catch a ball like that. Soderstrom was awarded the single on it

Yea, players can't use equipment outside of its intended use.

Catchers can't use their mask to wrangle the ball either. Catchers balk

Is it 3 bases for the intentional use of equipment outside of its intended use (hat to catch the ball), and 1 base for unintentional (gets caught in shirt)?

Yes, you can't intentional use your equipment (other than glove) to catch or corral a ball. That's three bases

Once I was watching a tie game, in the 9th inning a Detroit runner on 2nd base. A ball in the dirt right in front of the catcher, he scooped it with his mask before throwing it back to the pitcher. Sparky Anderson walked out spoke to the home plate umpire who awarded the runner home, ending the game.

Used to be the ball was considered a live ball and the fielder had to retrieve it and play it.

Ron Luciano mentioned it in one of his books. The ball disappeared and the runners kept running. Eventually they found it stuck inside the catcher's protective equipment.

Both managers asked for a ruling so he faked his way through it and said "If the ball lodges in the catcher's mask or paraphernalia each runner is entitled to advance one base".

He later found out the ball was live the whole time. He didn't know because MLB removed an appendix to the rulebook which covered weird situations including that one.
