Having lived in Alaska for about 5 years...I have to say...basketball is a bigger sport up there than hockey

Yep, someone is just guessing on that map. Looks like a fraud to me.

Hockey is pretty minor here, basketball is king without a doubt and it's not even close.

or why they call it "soccer" and named one of their sports football

The term came from the Brits. They can blame themselves if they don't like people using it. As far as calling the sport in the US "football," it's a term used by 4 different sports: Association Football (soccer), Rugby Football, American Football & Australian Rules Football. American Football is a derivative of rugby....so why NOT call it football?

I remember everyone suddenly being a Duke fan because of Trajan Langdon...especially the Native Alaskans.

Yep.

Lots of ACC fans here for some reason, particularly in the bush. I suppose they watch a lot of UNC and Duke on satellite.

Basketball is king in the village. Some of those native kids are pretty damn good too.

Arizona is basketball?

Yeah, that right there made me think the poll was pretty wacky. Football and baseball are far more popular than basketball in AZ.

I'm surprised that California is basketball. The Lakers are huge, but football is still more popular in my circle.

Aussie rules, rugby, and even basketball seemed more popular with all the Australians I met while traveling
