I read the OP's source as saying the Lions are looking to trade him to accommodate a request from Swift. If that's wrong, then it is the most Lions thing ever to destroy your leverage by looking to move a guy AFTER the world saw you pick his replacement.

The Lions aren’t afraid to use an early round pick on a running back.
2015: Ameer Abdullah drafted in the second round.
2018: Kerryon Johnson drafted in the second round.
- Abdullah waived during the season.
2020: D’Andre Swift drafted in the second round.
- Johnson was waived in the offseason.
They’ve been using a valuable second round pick every 2-3 years on a RB. That RB disappoints, so they use another early pick on a replacement. Swift is gone after this season. He’s been productive when healthy, and the Lions used the 35th pick on him just three years ago. They want to get something in return for him instead of just letting him walk out the door nine months from now when his contract expires.

They need to find a trade for a decent vet in a position of need.

The Lions are going to replace Jamaal Williams and D'Andre Swift with David Montgomery and a rookie they reached on.
I mean they’re going significantly younger with both and I’d argue that behind THAT line Montgomery will actually outproduce Williams.
Williams wasn’t exactly a special player. He was just decent and they were willing to run him behind that beast of a line.

See?
You overvalue the RB market
