why would umpires need to memorize every bat that has been banned.
UH maybe because it's THEIR JOB, they get paid WELL to do a job. I'm not saying it changes the total outcome, but it was an incorrect call.

do they actually get paid well? Honest question. I always assumed they didn't get paid well. Because most of the time they are all pretty bad at their job

I was told they make $90 a game for High School, then it goes up during playoffs. That is roughly $30-50 an hr depending on length of game. That is well in my book. Oh, plus room and board

some are good, some are great some are not..... but there is a serious shortage of them. but yes.. all involved should have known what bats are banned... and.. for the record if the bat rule was enforced to the letter - about half the bats kids use if not more would be removed.....

I officiated to give something back to something my family got so much out of .. and I don't want the time commitment of coaching... oh...and I enjoy it.... and... I am fairly good at at it..

Regular season is $75/game tops + travel compensation. Yes, the fees do increase during the playoffs and they pay for room and per diem if overnight stay is required.

I was implying PER GAME rates as in Hourly Rates. Your investment into becoming an umpire is like me saying I make very minimal due to my college debt. I am always at games early to watch team BP and opponent entering, most Umps are NEVER their an hr early. Smartass. Most HS umpires do it because they love it I'm sure. Anyone can have an opinion if they are good or not. I wasn't saying they were horrible. LHSAA rep that allowed the bat is horrible. Cutos to the ump for calling that dufus.

You may not see them because they do not go into the stadium/field until just prior to the game. However, most umpires do arrive at the site AT LEAST 30 minutes before game time to dress and go over things with their partner(s).

Again, they are well paid. I am not here to bash umpires, they have a difficult job. My opinion of the whole matter was LHSAA official called dropped the ball. I know most umpires by name and know parents bash them for anything not going in their teams favor. I am not that guy nor is my wife, we find it humurous/embarassing of the ones that constently bash umpires during the games.
Some parents just don't get it.

not sure who they talked to at the LHSAA though....... obviously it was not the right person.... but on a 3 man post season crew - somebody should have stepped up and known the rule/made the call

Sorry, but that umpire should have ever had to get on the phone. If he's calling 2nd round 5A playoff games, he needs to know the damn rules. Judgement calls will always be questioned, but know the frickin' rules. That's pretty embarrassing.
Knowing the rule is one thing, but memorizing the entire decertified bats list is asinine. He was probably calling to get verification that the bat was illegal.

Marucci Cat5 33"
Reebok Vector TLS 32"
That's the whole damn list! Does it even qualify as a list if it's only 2 items? If he doesn't know this, I know damn well he doesn't know the full table of base awards.

There is nothing in the book that says it is an umpire's responsibility to know which bats are legal or illegal, but only that a coach must verbally agree that they are legally and properly equipped according to NFHS standards.
I've called ball for close to 10 years at the HS and college levels and I can say I have no clue what bats have been decertified.
Furthermore... if you think we are paid "WELL" you are sadly mistaken. We aren't making a living off of it, and most times, after travel, camps, and equipment is purchased... you are lucky to make an extra $1000.00 per year. It isn't about the money.

Is it just me, or does every person on Tiger droppings in this forum have a side job as an umpire?
