LHSAA and School Choice

Is there a poster who is knowledgeable on this subject?
As a freshman, can your child enroll into any school within your Parish? Are there geographical restrictions?
How does it affect middle school students?
If your children have been attending the school they are zoned for and move to another zone, how are they affected?
Are there any parishes limiting school choice?
TIA

Your child can pick any school in the parish and declare it his home school. If he decides to transfer to another school, he must sit out a year even if its in his own school zone. This is how I have interpreted it.

That is the way I have interpreted it too but I hear some parishes may not be allowing that. What about middle schoolers? Are they under the guidelines?

The above poster basically covered it.
Also this may or may not be factoring in your decision, but two different scenarios he did not covered that happen a lot.
1.) Lets say you live in one parish and want to send your kid to a private school in another parish. Then after say one or two years, you would like to send him to a public one within your own parish, does not matter he would have to sit out a year, because as the above poster mentioned your home school is where you start HS. Or vice versa, Public to private that is not MAIS.
2.) I believe there may be an exception for certain work related cases but I am not positive, I know if you or your spouse is a teacher or administrator there are multiple things you can do, but in terms of a private employee not totally sure.
Within each parish I do not know how they do certain zoning, it could be different, thus why they have the home school thing in place, as well as for other reasons obviously. But to make sure if your son or daughter is serious about any LHSAA sport, by simply calling or emailing the school AD's or respective coaches, I think that is your best bet. The LHSAA bylaws and finding each case can be confusing, and the worst thing to do would be to possibly down the line mess up a kids junior or senior year, when they will have the most fun, memories, etc..., playing the sport they love.

I think the Northshore would be a prime example.

I believe their is an exception, but I'm not 100% certain. The player may not have to miss a year if the he head coach, AD, principal, and Superintendant sign a waiver allowing the transfer.

When did this change? Is it only if it involves 2 parishes? Tommy Banks, Andrew Whitworth, DJ Banks, and Willis Britton left OCS/St Fred for WM and never sat out a single day.
Banks/Whit were at WM as freshmen. Banks/Britton transferred in as juniors.

The LHSAA does what they want. They're a bunch of clowns that flip flop on their rules. They are never consistent.

If a child is enrolling as a first time 9th grader, and they have not established a school of first choice already, they will be eligible at any school in their parish. It is possible for them to have established a school of first choice already if they participated in jv or varsity athletics in the 7th or 8th grade. Students are allowed a one time transfer in parish and they do not have to sit out if both principals and the superintendent sign off on the transfer. If they move a second time in the parish they must sit out 1 year. As far as attendance goes, some parishes still maintain attendance zones and students must go to the school where they live.

What if you have established your school of choice and it is in your zoned attendance. Then in six months to a year you move to another attendance zone within the same parish; can you stay at your established school of choice?

You should. There is a rule in play that allows a student to stay at the school and in some cases the the same school district they have been attending.

Sadly this is the best answer you will find on the subject.

If the school allows you to stay even after you move out of the district, the athlete would be eligible because you did not break your chain of attendance.

Not true. Trey Ragas started at St. Aug in orleans parish and transferred to shaw in jefferson and was immediately eligible. His parents live in Jefferson Parish. Shaw became his school of choice bc he lived in the parish.

So the school has the choice to allow you to stay, not the school board?

The school would enforce whatever rules the school board has set forth to govern these type of situations.
