Defense for most of the 80 was awful. Those pistons teams were what started that hard nosed Defense trend. Lebron would have been just as much of a star then as he is now. And if you would have given him Hand Checks like they did back then he would be even better on Defense.

NBA anymore is a joke.

That's why viewership has steadily declined.

It's not "back in the day". It's poor play, poor officiating, and lack of basic skills.

And I find it funny that a blatant foul is what you come up with for physical play. If you base physical play on youtube snippets than you have no concept of how basketball really is played at a high level.

Ratings have increased over the last decade or so. And ratings for everything have decreased since the 90s due to increased viewing options

Not to be a stickler, but he only has 19 games of 25/10/5 over the past five years (including this season)

His stat lines from last year and the 09 playoffs are fricking ridiculous. People forget how badly he bukkake'd the Magicians in the 09 ECF.

Not true.

Defensive fundamentals are clearly, 100% absolutely at an all time high right now.

That's gonna be one of the most underrated series ever by an individual because he lost. But losing doesn't downgraded in any way how good he was.

40/8/8. The big 3 to tie. The 2 free throws to force OT with .1 seconds left. And I believe he had a couple of other big time shots in the final 10 or 20 seconds of games, only to see Rashard Lewis or whoever hit game winners.

Wasn't that the winning shot in Game 1? Lebron was so calm last night after hitting that layup; he didn't even crack a smile. I remember how surprised he was when he hit that shot against Orlando though. It looked like a fade from about 30 feet that he flicked up there effortlessly. What a ridiculous series.

I was thinking about that last night, the difference from being younger and super excited to last night's "reaction"

They lost game 1 by 1 point. So, game 2 was a must win since it was at home for CLE. I was actually incorrect, they were down 2 and he hit that shot to give CLE the win, talk about huge.

Since the 90s, that has been the overall trend.

No they're not. Poor defense, and more importantly poor offensive skills in overall NBA play, create that mirage.

He actually looked annoyed last night after he hit that layup, like how the frick did we almost lose this game?

It's been up over the last decade, so saying it's "steadily" declined is definitely false.

This would mean that it has been fluctuating back and forth.

You want to see a mirage?

Watch ESPN Classic, watch ANY game in all of those epic Lakers-Celtics NBA Finals. Then come back to this thread, there is absolutely no chance anyone can watch a full game from then, then come back and say defense was better in the 80s than it is today.

90s weren't even really that much more physical, in the normal sense. Sure, they had a few more of those big hits, but people act like they were happening all game, every game, which is false. Otherwise, today's game is about as physical.

But as far as the intricacies of the way defense is played now and the complexities, no, there is absolutely no way to argue that any other era was more complex than today's defense. It's not even close.

You realize that since the '90s that has been the overall trend for ALL programming?

If someone tries to argue this then they aren't worth talking to. I liken it to defense in football. there has just been more time for sports minds to develope better philosophies. Like great defenses from way back in the day comapered to a Nick Saban defense. Hell wasn't it mind blowing when coaches started moving around outside linebackers to rush the passer? That's everyday shite now.

And I'd bet my life the same type changes have happened in the NBA. The zone alone was HUGE.

Anyone who thinks defense was better back then is a god damn moron. There isn't another way to say it.

Lebron has been so fricking clutch in the past couple postseasons. Anyone who thinks he isn't clutch is retarded. Btw, good thread too. Good stats.

I really like Lebron but I wish he would cut all this BS out (not that he is the only player). He looks retarded and is just trying to shock people. Maybe one day he will wear a trash bag or womens clothes and people will say, wow he can pull it off, look at that swagger
