Feel like they have been gaining popularity due to that.

The Masters used to do a good job of limiting access. Now it seems like they’re not only embracing new ways to attract audiences, that actively leaning into it with women and it’s becoming more “Derby”-esque, meaning its role as a social event is outpacing its role as a sporting event.

Social media bitches have made the derby explode in popularity recently. It used to be seedy and horse racing as a whole was declining in popularity. But now it’s a social status thing.

Sad but true - you see it even at local racetracks now. The bigger races draw out the attention hoes treating it like a fashion show.

Why is it sad? The sport needs new blood and if that means chick's in silly hats I'm all for it.

The 4th race at Louisiana Downs today was for maiden claimers. It had 60K in the win pool. A couple of years ago a weekday maiden claiming race would be lucky to have a 15k handle.

This is true but I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing unless they start breaking traditions (like letting phones in during official rounds, etc.). If we can teach them some about the game we love then why not.

It's also worth noting that as Churchill continues to build, it reduces capacity in places like the infield, the Paddock, etc.

For example this was the Paddock in the 80s:

And the Infield in 1996:

I hate the new paddock. Do they only open it derby week?

As do I. We always enjoyed walking over before the race to check things out in the old Paddock, standing right up at the railing. Now they've pushed that back and you have limited access if you don't have a premium ticket in that area. They'll limit certain areas during bigger race days like Derby, Oaks, Breeder's Cup, etc.

It's also all stupidly expensive "seating".

New Paddock Seating

Let's be honest, I have about 1,000 issues with all of the bullshite they're building at the Downs these days. It's completely taken away from the local experience. It's like the "local" day used to be Oaks but now it's pushed all the way back to that Tuesday because of increased cost, restrictions, etc.

It's not "our" track anymore. For that, I have to head over to Keeneland these days.

I was there the last day of the old “paddock”

It was mostly torn down already. Not a beautiful backdrop
For the gr1 Clark

I mostly hate Churchill in general. They are the slumlords of track ownership everywhere but the home base. I’m proud of Louisiana for standing up to them years ago and presenting a list of demands before they’d renew their slots

I’ll say it again…

Ever since I got a good look at him and that crooked right front at FG I’ve wondered how long he has. He’s HUGE and by Justify and Lukas trains hard. Horse was head bobbing lame all last week. It’s good for me that he enters bc Rodriguez won’t get an easy lead, but I hope he holds up in the race…

It’s funny that even Lukas called out the ride on his buddy’s horse. I saw that after 1 furlong the 2 and 1 were widest on the track of all (and no fault of the 2 in that at all). Baffert=bullshite. Wonder if they would have done something if someone got hurt.

Derby winner skipping the preakness. Sucks for nbc.

He’ll run 3-4 more times then retire. Into mischief’s are so damn fragile. Then he’ll breed more fragile babies
