Churchill Downs Racetrack officials released a 62-page health and safety operations plan Wednesday that will limit attendance to the 146th Kentucky Derby to less than 14% of total capacity from the 2015 attendance record (170,513).

That means about 23,000 guests will be allowed at the track.

I had no idea the attendance could get that high. It's just something I never thought about, I guess I'd have figured 70,000 but 170,000, damn.

I went in 2012 when I’ll Have Another won it. Didn’t realize how enormous Churchill Downs was until getting to the entrance. Different perspective on the venue than watching it on TV. They broke the attendance record that year with a little over 165k people. Would love to make it back there in the next few years.

The infield will probably be closed this year. I went last year for the first time and had a blast.

Horse racing is huge in Japan and they get crowds like that every race day. Well, I guess not now with social distancing but you know what I mean.

No infield or general admission. I guess just boxes?

Better than 0%, so we’re at least making progress. Been saying this of sports for months - people who think we’ll just magically go back to packed stadiums are delusional.

It’s going to be a slow trickle over time until one day we look up and the stands are packed. That might be next year, maybe not. Certainly ain’t gonna be in 2020

Well it's 40% in the seating that will be open. That seems excessive.

Pretty much.

They should have plenty of space to distance and such. The track is huge.
