Up until it mattered most

Marino threw more INTs in one SB than Montana did in 4

I don't have the numbers in front of me, but I'd bet Marino was also sacked more times in that SB than Joe was in 4 SBs.

The Dolphins were 7-12 without Marino from 1984-1998 while the 49ers were 13-6-1 without Montana from 1981-1990.

Brad Johnson and Joe Flacco have more Super Bowls as well.

Football is the ultimate team sport and Marino had no where near the supporting cast of Montana. The Walsh system was something never seen before at that time, and you couldn’t just key in on one player. Marino was it, and it all fell on him, so it was easier to key on certain points to somewhat derail him. That’s not Marino’s fault.

you sound like these people who say Manning is better than Brady

You can keep your stats and your physical skills, there was no bigger big game quarterback in football than Joe Montana and that's what really matters at the end of the day.

And also saying it was just the system only proves to me you never actually watched Montana play. It's an absurd suggestion.

I think people forget the Niners were 15-1 that year in 84. That wasn’t Craig’s 1000/1000 year that was 85

Putting the Dolphins on his back,

It's maybe the best year a QB has ever had considering how far ahead he was of his peers at the time.

It's not like today where a Brees or Brady or whomever breaks some passing yard record or passes for X amount of yards and everyone says meh...because there are 10 other QBs just right behind them with tons of yards...and some very average QBs to boot.

It's a testament to how difficult it was to get to and sack Marino - his release was that quick. All those great pass rushers in the 80s when they could take your head off - helmet to helmet in the noggin' - and dive into your knees - no Brady rule - and linebackers could take out receivers going across the middle before the ball was thrown...and safeties could spear receivers.

But that all said, lets not continue the myth that Marino had no help.

In Marino’s record-setting 1984 season, the Dolphins had the No. 1 scoring offense in football and the No. 6 scoring defense (18.6 points per game).

In 1984, Marino set single-season records with 48 touchdowns and 5,084 yards passing. The Dolphins still managed 1,918 rushing yards and averaged 4.0 yards per carry.

Marino had a stout defense and a running game...which is why they made the Super Bowl - you need defense in the playoffs not just a high flying offense (See Dan Fouts.)

was just the system

Don’t twist words to try and make your argument. Montana was one of the greatest ever, along with a few other hall of famers. Never said it was just a system.
I’ll say Marino would have one a Super Bowl or two with those teams. Many so called experts would agree
How would Montana fair on those Miami teams? That would be interesting

Best season ever for an NFL qb.

Considering qb is the most important position, may as well call it the best season by an individual period.

Yes, they did, that year. Later on, not as much.

even on his last legs he dragged a pretty average KC team to the AFC Championship Game, i'll say 2 with an outside chance at 3.

Kinda hard to advance to the big game when your D constantly disappoints in the regular season and playoffs, also I seem to recall Marino defeated Montana in Montana’s final game ever

Blhahahahahahahaha

That year he had 13 tds to 7 ints. And in the playoffs he had 4tds to 3ints. Yeah he really dragged them.
From his stats he may have been their weak point

The notion Marino had no running game or defense gets destroyed when you look at Elway/Broncos in the same era. Miami had much more talent than Denver, yet Elway put them on his back for 3 Super Bowl runs, where they were clearly overmatched. Dan Reeves was horrible with the draft and roster management.

At the end of the day Dan Marino is just what we think he is... a born loser.

Montana was basically on crutches at that point, it's like Rocky Marciano-Joe Louis fight.
