This will be a big part in the contributory negligence aspect of the case.

not really. As KBeezy explained a spot is not expected to catch that much weight in a sudden free fall.

Bingo,

A spotter is used as a guide when you need a little extra burst to get the weight up. Hulk Hogan's not catching an instantaneous 300 lb drop.

The only way USC is negligent is if they coached the players to use a monkey grip (suicide grip). Some say it feels more comfortable than a full grip, but I think it is just an unnecessary risk.
