This is my take on the situation: Being in the business he's in, Kimmel knows that there is a lot more leeway given to statements made about public figures. He knows that he has no case at all right now.
My best guess is that Kimmel asked his lawyer what he can do. His lawyer said to put out a public statement that he (Kimmel) has never met Epstein and has never even been near him, etc. After this statement, if Rodgers continues to insinuate Kimmel having any relationship with Epstein, then he'll have more of a case that Rodgers is intentionally defaming him.
While Rodgers is the type to push back, I'll be surprised if he doesn't just drop this and move on to the next attention-seeking, button-pushing gossip.
