Didn't stay there long enough. What he did at Stanford was more difficult to do than what the little fella is doing where he is.

That would never happen. A Michigan man would never work well here.

Oh, never mind.

As one of few who have had both men coach my team at one point, I'd have to take Harbaugh, but it's close.

The difference being that I think Harbaugh could win 3 or 4 NCs at a power college program. Saban clearly however cannot do what Jim is doing in Frisco.

Mike Nolan and Scot McLoughan drafted or signed Patrick Willis, Frank Gore, Vernon Davis, Dashon Goldson, Ahmad Brooks, Navarro Bowman, Tarrell Brown, Ray McDonald, Justin Smith, Michael Crabtree, Alex Boone, Anthony Davis, Mike Iupati, and Joe Staley. The only draft picks in the Harbaugh/Baalke regime that are major contributors for the 49ers right now are Aldon Smith and Colin Kaepernick. All the other 49ers starters were picked up as free agents. How did Jim Harbaugh NOT inherit a very talented team?

right. he just did what Mike Singletary couldn't do, win games.

Saban is a better coach though and its not even close.

Surprise surprise you need talent to win.

He has got those professional athletes to play as a unit. That's not an easy thing to do. The 49ers were a "talented" team for awhile before he got there yet didnt win shite. Harbaugh came in off the street with no track record as an NFL coach whatsoever and totally changed the culture there overnight.

I know you just can't handle anybody but Saban getting love but I've lived through both of these men coaching teams I root for. Both are great but Harbaugh is slightly better. Deal With It.

To be fair, Mike Singletary (and Mike Nolan) were historically bad coaches. Mike Nolan was a far better GM than he was a coach. The 49ers roster was in horrid shape when Nolan got there and he completely rebuilt that roster into what it is today. He just couldn't coach to save his life.

Again, Nolan and Singletary were historically inept coaches. It's like Tennessee with Derek Dooley or the Jets under Rich Kotite. With competent coaching, those teams would have done much better.

Whenever this thread comes up people always say nick can only do it at power programs, which is crap. Lsu wasn't a power program whenever saban got there. We were pretty terrible. Dinardo had a good season in the 90s but that's about it. He built lsu into a yearly contender.

Harbaugh is a great coach. I'd love to have him at Alabama when Saban leaves (not gonna happen though). But even a semi-competent coach could win games with the roster San Francisco has. From top to bottom they are the most talented team in the NFC.

Comeon dude LSU was a sleeping giant.

At Michigan State he was 6-6 or 7-5 every year except one.

I'm not really trying to take anything away from him. He's obviously one of the best of this generation, but when you ask people to compare 2 greats you have to find a place to split hairs.

Sleeping giant? If they were a sleeping giant then why was there only 1 national title before him? Call it what you want, but lsu hadn't won shite in years before he got there.p

LSU always had the potential to be great because of the talent in Louisiana (#1 in the nation in per capita NFL players) huge stadium/fan base and lack of in state competition.

Lots of teams have potential but some never do anything. You are kinda making it seem like its easy. If it was that easy we would have had more than 1 title before he got here. shite before him the last time they even won an sec title was 1988. I'm well aware of bunches of NFL players being from la. A lot of them tended not to come here before saban though.

Never said it was easy at all. I have said multiple times that Saban is one of the greats and that's beyond dispute.

And no, not a lot of places have that kind of potential.

Any of the bigger schools in Texas, California, and Florida have that kind of potential. I know they have more competition but they also have a lot more players.

I do think if saban went to Stanford he would have similar success. He would have built that same style great defense running game like harbaugh did.
