Dale, we had 2000 students during 3 years I was there.

Yep. WM has always been a huge school. Shows is the only reason WM got great. I remember Charlie Brown (old Neville coach) used to say that he would win a state championship every year if he coached at WM... because of all the talent. Well, they got a coach.

I went to West Monroe High School for 3 years, 1988-1990. The 1st major problem was just that, only 3 years at the high school, with the 9th grade being in the junior highs. Yes, WM had 2000 students feeding from jr highs(WMJH, Boley, Riser, Richardson, and Woodlawn) all running different offenses and defenses.

The 9th grade was moved to the high school during the 1988-1989 school year Ross Davis was fired after the 3-9 1988 football season. BTW, West Monroe's record in 1987 was 1-9. Shows was hired abouut January of 1989 and his 1st hire was Casey Sanders. WM had no weight program to speak of before that. It was bad then...with construuction, they had to practice at Boley and dress out at the stadium. In 1989, they went 5-5 with only about 35 players on varsity! They were very talented with 6 players signing with colleges, including Shawn King to LSU.

Arledge came to WM in 1992 and it took a complete 4 year cycle to get to where they were in 1993. The rest is hisory. Let's not forget that the community involvement and booster club at West Monroe is 2nd to none. With that, I personally think that Don Shows is a piece of crap! Most of his former players do as well, especially in his early days(he made the player's parents pay for their uniform if they were damaged his 1st year)!

It is much more than that! The community support and the influx of cash from the boosters. He surrounds himself with excellent coaches.

That all happened after Shows though. There wasn't ANY support when WM was losing. The bandwagon got HUGE after 93.

Since this thread is about WM: I was just reading up on WM's history, more specifically their state championship history. Apparently 1993 was their first one and we all know they've been back on the reg since then. What changed in 1993 to make them so dominant?

Coach Childress retired from Ruston. We owned the Rebs back then. My how things have changed..

Micah Eugene is a beast and maybe if he could score higher than a 16 on the ACT, he'd end up at a good college.

The 1989 team's starting OT hurt his shoulder and tore his jersey up and he made his parents pay for it.
