I know we're talking college only, but the amazing thing about Earl Campbell was that he won the Heisman his senior year, then won the NFL MVP award his first three years in the league. He also was NFL Rookie of the Year in 1978.

Reggie was more than a year player. He started at IB for 2 years

Sanders just one and had a great year, but he was only a kick returner basically his first two.

Campbell played FB and IB so that is why.

The one guy I forgot and probably should be on the list is Allen, he started as FB for White, who won the Heisman and then won the Heisman as a IB.

I think we would talk about Derek Brown/Calvin J0ones as greats, they went for 2,290 and rotated series, if one was the all time starter. Lawerence Phillips at NU was a beast also, and he never gets mentioned.

Leland McElroy on talent and speed alone probably deserves mention also.

That's right. He played in the Wishbone under Royal, somewhat stunting his stats, then Akers came in his senior year ('77) and installed the I-formation, featuring Earl.

Rumor I had heard to keep Ricky from leaving and joining the Phillies when Mack was hired was that the new staff promised him enough carries to win the Heisman. I am not sure how true it is, but I think people forget he was in AA with the Phillies.

At the time the Doak Walker award only went to Texas backs it seemed so his 2 times then I believe Morris, Hanspard, and Cobb won it also. I think 6 of first 8 went to guys from Texas.

But I maintain that he is an outside shot Hall of Famer.

EDIT: Speaking mainly his pro career.

Reason I did not put Sanders on it was a 1 year thing

But what a year it was. Sanders had 3,757 rushing yards on 558 carries - 5.9 YPC, in 3 seasons, only 1 as a starter.

For comparison, Peterson had 4,041 yards in 3 seasons on 748 carries for a 5.4 YPC average, although he missed time due to injuries in his sophomore and junior seasons.

Yeah, I'm not too sure about that. If Edgerrin James isn't getting in, Ricky doesn't stand a chance IMO.
