I am in my 50's and attended 50 or so Celtic games between 1980 and 1990. Bird is my favorite player ever! He had the best instincts ever and simply saw things developing faster than anyone else. He knew where he would one-time or direct the ball before it got to him. He is a top 5 all-time passer and knew where rebounds would go before missed shots hit the rim. He was THE MASTER at establishing position...enough room so he could rebound balls after they bounced off the floor and so that he could go straight-up with two hands in rebounding while the higher jumpers had to reach in over-the-back. He was also a master at moving without the ball, anticipating what what about to happen and slipping through cracks for offensive boards!

La'Bron, however, is arguably the best defender ever, because he can defend all positions and the most valuable offensive player ever, because he can play all positions...score from outside, score with back-to-the-basket (which he really developed in 2011), distribute, rebound, anticipate, dominate with his athleticism, etc...there is nothing on the court he cannot do! When finished, La'Bron will have 4-5 rings and 6-7 MVP's. IMO, Bird is top 7-10 all-time, but La'Bron will retire at 37 or 38 as the best ever.

Hell, James is a phenomenal passer. For some reason people in this thread choose to forget that.

Indeed, but bird being a better defender is funnier. Imagine Larry Bird guarding Tony Parker.

He is but Bird might be the best passer ever.
ETA: Here is a LINK to a video of him passing for the youngsters.

Bird was a better shooter, but this isn't lopsided either because Lebron is really good here too.
which is why the Spurs played 5 steps off him and dared him to shoot the whole finals?
these types of comparisons suck because the players are so different, but strictly speaking
Bird's shooting >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Lebron's shooting

I've seen that video many times, and LeBron is the better passer.
LeBron has the strength to throw a pass with one hand from the rim to the 3-point line through defenders.
Larry never had that ability.

yeah that poster showed his fanboi status with that post.

that doesnt make him a better passer, only stronger.
eta: i bet nash or stockton couldnt do that, is LBJ a better passer than they are as well?

As much as it pains me to say it, a few more seasons at this pace and he will easily be the best SF ever.

Arm strength alone doesn't make you a better passer. Besides Larry had some SERIOUS arm strength. Look at some of those outlet passes. If you think LeBron is better find me some video evidence of him making passes better than Bird made in those videos. Not one or two good passes, but DOZENS of amazing ones.

I'm a Heat fan. Bird was a better passer and shooter. Its closer then people think, because Lebron is very good at both as well though. Lebron is better on D, is a better scorer, and a better re bounder though.

of course, he has the chance to squeeze into the MJ/Russell discussion. thats not what was asked in the OP though.
