The only way Kobe is Top 10 is if you are ranking the players by career accomplishments...if this is a resume contest.

...and NOT, talent, "it" factor, all-around ability, make teammates better, elevate the franchise, win titles on your own - ergo - who'd you pick starting a franchise?

It must be because all I see are stats and points scored and shooting percentages...and then someone has the gall to shoot down MVP as a popularity contest and yet wants to hang everything on "stats in a vacuum" - that's not basketball.

You need to have seen the players...and everyone elevating Kobe...must have missed the 80's.

What we have here is a lot of people who don't have the knowledge or firsthand experience because they weren't alive - to make a reasonable judgment based on actual in the present eye test when it comes to Bird circa 1983, or Magic...or Kareem 1981-'85.

Look, it's obviously difficult to split up the greatest players in the NBA because of the difference in their roles. Taking a page out of the OTs book, lets put them in tiers.

Tier 1 - Jordan

Tier 2 - Kareem, Wilt, Magic, Bird, Shaq, Hakeem

Tier 3 - Russell, Kobe, LeBron, Robertson, Stockton, Pippen, Duncan, Barkley, Dr. J, Baylor, West, both Malones

That's where I believe things stand at the moment.

Two of these are not like the other.

Uh yea that is the main thing I look at.

talent, "it" factor, all-around ability

Kobe is Top 5 in this regard maybe #2
quote:

make teammates better

I'll give you this. Though I think it is overblown, it is the reason he is only Top 10 and not #2.

elevate the franchise, win titles on your own

Done. Done.

who'd you pick starting a franchise

He would be in my top 10. Basketball at an elite level for nearly two decades. His longevity is amazing.

Bird circa 1983, or Magic...or Kareem 1981-'85

All in my top 10 ahead of Kobe

LeBron's shooting still is mediocre at best. His shot selection is what has improved. He's taking nearly half his shots within the restricted area. So yeah, his shooting percentages are up, but he's seldom a threat from outside of 12 feet.

Kobe was better than Dirk, but you have to consider the unique year Dirk had in 06-07. He went 25-9-3.5. Pretty good, but what's so special? The fact that he is the only big man in history to shoot over 90% from the free throw line, 40% from 3 point range, and over 50% from the field in general. Only a handful of guard have ever done that and none of them were their teams primary scoring option.

That team won 67 games that year. Their starters outside of Dirk were Devin Harris, Jason Terry, Josh Howard, and Erick Dampier. So 3 C level players and a B level player. That's either the second or third most wins in a season by a NBA team. That's more than the Heat had this year for perspective. What's also funny is that most people thought thought that team was just like the Kings before them and the Suns teams during and after them: Run and gun and just try to outscore your opponent because you can't stop them. Those Mavs were 4th in points allowed per game.

But Kobe definitely should have won over Steve Nash. Nash had two All-Stars on his team and a bunch of solid role players. Kobe had Smush Parker and Bill Walton's ginger offspring.
