Found this LINK ]Smithsonian article on Paul Morphy
quote:

Morphy set sail for Paris, where he won a “blindfold” tournament: He sat in one room of the Café de la Regence while his eight opponents sat in another. The opponents had the chess boards, along with several other players who could give them advice; Morphy simply faced a bare wall and called out his moves in loud, clear, flawless French. He played for 10 hours, with no food or drink, and beat them all. “He was shaken by the hand and complimented till he hung down his head in confusion,” the New York Times reported. “Such a mind never did exist, and, perhaps, never will again.”

it's as much a sport as nascar

NASCAR at least requires tremendous hand-eye coordination and balls of steel from their drivers who are putting their life on the line every time they are on a racetrack. What type of physical risk are people taking when they play chess? What type of athletic skills are required for people to be good at chess? The answer is none. Chess is not a sport.

I wouldn't call it a sport, no. I would consider it in the same category as competitive gaming. Such as: Poker, Magic: The Gathering, and e-sports such as Overwatch, Starcraft, etc.
