Yes, that's him. He's another Grandmaster from NOLA.

Well, maybe he's not a Grandmaster. I've looked just now on the internet and I'm not sure.

He's a master, not a grand master. There's a range of titles, and he has one of the lower ones. There was some controversy because he gained rating points against mostly weak players to get the necessary rating for the title, but he did compete well in some tournaments against pretty strong competition to prove that he is at least a very strong player. People who are titled as grandmasters are on another world from him though.

NOLA should indeed have a statue of Paul Morphy.

What is your position on the change of Candyland from a card-driven game to one that uses a spinner instead of cards? The publisher made the change in 2013.

This means that all of your pre 2013 copies of Candyland with cards instead of a spinner are now valuable collector's items.

My dad was on the Romanian Junior National team growing up and was treated the same as the real athletes. He was eating meals with weight lifters. He reached FM, which is the third highest master ranking behind GM and IM. CSB

Awesome story. Thanks for sharing. Your Dad must be a very intelligent person. I hope you inherited his intelligence.

Very cool story.

No but it's a fantastic game. The planning, thinking ahead, and mental stamina great players exhibit is amazing

I just don't think that NASCAR is much of a sport either.

My little brother played him when he was in the quarter one day when my brother was a little kid. My dad has played in local tournaments since the 60s and knew Acers in passing. Poor guy kept trying to sell his book so my dad bought it for my brother even though he was like 7.

Ha. Compelling argument. You're right. Sitting on your arse for a few hours is a sport.

Glad you think it's cool, I'll add a couple of other tidbits.

He beat a guy who beat Bobby Fischer, I'll ask him what his name was tomorrow, I always forget it.

He has been cited in chess books for discovering a variation that Fischer could have used to win a match he lost or the opponent could have beat Fischer with, I can't remember which one. A variation is an alternative set of moves that would naturally flow based upon a different move.

In the 70s, he was ranked in the top 500

He tried to teach me and I was too impatient. I wanted to beat him. Imagine a 12- year- old pissed he couldn't beat a master. The most he'd let me do is draw him after changing a couple of my mistakes along the way.

He hates how chess analysis is basically entirely computer based now.

I'd say it's a skill, not a sport.

In Russia Chess is more than a sport, it's considered a cultural pursuit on the level of ballet or music

Cool story about your father

Knowledgeable enough to string together a few sentences into forming a thought, unlike you.

IMHO, and I think you'll agree, Chess belongs on this board, not the Gaming Board. It is treated like a sport by the Eastern Europeans.

Besides, the Gaming Board is, I thought, is for computer games and games played with X box and the like.
