ULM has to be near the top but I think they would would a solid FCS program and actually have fans come to games again.

well we know the worst jobs aren't at AQs... out of 70-something of them, they're all in the top 100 bc recruits would rather play at those places

I wouldn't call North Carolina a bad football job.

What about an awesome job. Like the head coach at UNLV. Make a decent salary, plus the cost of living is fairly cheap cause of the housing market and, oh yeah, you're in Vegas.

San jose state has had some talent, but people in san jose couldn't care less about college football. I lived there for 27 years. I didn't follow college ball until I went to lsu for law school. My first lsu game blew my mind. I'd never seen anything like it. It forever changed my saturdays! The biggest tailgate at a sj state game couldn't fill 1/4 of the parade grounds at lsu. The sharks are a much bigger draw there. Giants baseball and 9ers football all hugely outrank sj state. I'd even bet that santa clara basketball is a bigger draw. The stadium is old, small, and in a bad part of town. De la salle vs. Bellarmine high school games get more local media attention. But...they get to go to hawaii every other year!

I really dislike these threads. There's no right answer to any of these opinions, they're just that, opinion. I'll use Miami as an example. Some would say that it is one of the best because of the location and the high rated recruits that come out of the area. Others could say that the fan support is awful and the expectations are too high there. There's no real right answer.

3. UCLA

I don't even think that job's the 3rd worst in their conference

I actually see where he's going with this. UCLA is tough to win at because the school won't pay enough for good assistant coaches to be able to afford the high cost of living in the LA area.

Factor in the traffic, and you have a situation not conducive to hiring and retaining the best assistants.

Those small jobs aren't bad. A good coach at a MAC or Sun Belt job will get noticed and move up the ranks. And you've got the same problems as other MAC and Sun Belt schools, so it's an even playing field. Those are great jobs for a young up and comer.

Some other bad jobs aren't so bad because of lousy expectations. Vandy's never going to win squat, but there is no demand to win titles. So it's not that bad of a job.

No, the truly bad jobs are where you are unlikely to win AND there are expectations to do so. The jobs that are career killers:

COLORADO. Terrible facilities and still have memories of the 1990 title. Never going to win as long as the students care more about pot than football.

TEXAS TECH. Think they are second fiddle in Texas, but they have less conference titles than Baylor. They suck at everything, but think they should be a contender. We're talking about a school less successful than Baylor. That is in Lubbock.

OLE MISS. Haven't won since integration, but keep firing coaches like they should be in the running. They have stunk fairly consistently for 50 years, unless a Manning is their QB. Will not likely change.

VIRGINIA. The graveyard of coaching in the ACC. High expectations, always on the cusp, never ever come through. Now have fallen behind Virginia Tech which is unlikely to change.

PURDUE. You play second fiddle in Indiana and are expected to at least contend. It's not going to happen. Ever. If Drew Brees couldn't do it, neither can you.

I listed two schools in northern Ohio strictly based on location.

Ypsi actually has some really good burger joint apparently. Also, Ann Arbor is only about 15 minutes away so super easy commute

Kind of the point of this thread, I don't believe there is a right answer. It's all subjective, but again, just wanted people's thoughts on it.

Some pretty interesting answers. Some good ones, some that are totally off-base. Still a good discussion nevertheless

Pac 12 - Wazzou or Oregon State.

Both are in the middle of nowhere, have little in the way of a natural talent base, and no history of winning consistently. It doesn't help either that UW has a big history of winning while Oregon has all the Nike money for facilities and visibility.

SEC - Vandy. Full stop. High academic requirements and no history of success are a serious impediment to your career.

Kentucky and Ole Miss aren't much better than this, especially Ole Miss because of how strong LSU, Arky, Alabama, and Auburn are in addition to MS being a poor state for recruiting.

ACC - Duke. The last guy to get this team above .500 was named Spurrier and that was pre-FSU, when the league was a joke.

Big 12 - Iowa State. This would have been Baylor if not for Art Briles performing miracles and the loss of Nebraska and Colorado meaning that Baylor was no longer stuck in the Big 12 South.

Ames is in the middle of nowhere and Iowa State doesn't have a Bill Snyder to pull miracles out of his arse to make them competitive.

Big Ten - Indiana or Minnesota. Neither are talent-rich states or have a history of strong football.

The only way you win at either consistently would be with a gimmicky offense, such as Minny's power running game under Glen Mason or a spread like the one that Northwestern runs.

Wow, couldn't say it any better .

San Jose St. could pull in better recruits if they worked harder. With the amount of people who live in California and the relatively few number of D-1 football schools there, they should be able to grab the recruits in LA and Bay Area who aren't looked at by USC, Stanford, Cal etc. Fan base is horrible but location is decent. Could be much worse.

Idaho must be the worst. How do u convince kids its a good idea to move to Idaho. Also you hafta compete with Boise for the good instate recruits. What few good instate recruits they have.
