I agree with the love for the 1990s ESPN booth. Blackledge, right now, is why you show patience in announcers. He was terrible his first year, but he kept working at it and I agree, he's now one of the best in the business.

I actually like Gary. He gets people's knickers in a twist because he has opinions and he's critical. But he has a strong point of view, and I like that. Whoever said he just props up the SEC obviously doesn't watch CBS very much and is unaware of how much each fanbase hates him for comments he's made critical of their beloved alma mater. I enjoy his commentary. Verne is, well, he used to be great. But he's an institution.

He might nit-pick teams in the SEC but he mostly is just an SEC Honk. I'm not the first or only to comment on this over the years...Stewart Mandel at Sports Illustrated has complained about...(saying how many letters he gets); College Football News has complained; ESPN writers.

Oklahoman media columnist Mel Bracht wrote that Danielson was out of line. "At one time, I respected CBS analyst Gary Danielson. When he worked for ESPN/ABC, he gave the Big 12 its due. Since joining CBS, he has gotten on the SEC bandwagon to the point of making some ludicrous comments about the Big 12 and other conferences."

In 2006, he openly lobbied with broadcast partner Verne Lundquist for one-loss Florida to get a spot in the Bowl Championship Series title game."

Broadcasters should not be in the business of lobbying regardless of the circumstances.

First, every announcer is in the business of selling the game they are announcing. Gary "sells" the SEC because he announces exclusively SEC games, and he's paid to make the audience think this is the biggest game in the world. So saying he effectively sells the game he's announcing is a gross misunderstanding of what announcers get paid to do.

Secondly, criticising him for lobbying for the team that won the national title seems silly -- he was RIGHT.

Third, the Oklahoma paper just sounds like sour grapes. The SEC IS the best conference. He gets paid to announce the marquee game of themarquee conference every week. IT's absurd to expect him to say that the SEC isn't the best, when A) it's flatly untrue and B) contrary to his network's interest. He's not a journalist, he's an ingame commentator. The jobs are different.

The fact he IS critical of the teams playing shows he's doing he's job. It's not his job to downplay the quality of the game he's broadcasting.

So Michigan fans hate him because he lobbied for Florida in 2006 and Oklahoma fans hate him because he said Bradford should've gone pro and not risked injury? If anything, that makes me like him more. The objection to him were for strong opinions that local partisans didn't like because he didn't toe their line.

Though he was wrong on the SEC QB line, and that was silly.

What I remember is him saying that Tennessee was better than anyone on Mich's schedule outside OSU, ND, and Wisky, yet PSU beat Tennessee by 10 points in the bowl game.

Danielson ended up being right in the end, but the way he went about it seemed unprofessional
