re: If the read-option really is a mainstay in the NFL...

DC's are gonna start putting spies on these QB's and leveling them whenever they cross the line of scrimmage. That'll be the end of the read option.
That's brilliant, I wonder why Defensive Coordinators that get paid 6, 7 figure salaries haven't thought of that
That's easier said than done. Its also the same thing people said 20-25 years ago when guys like Randall Cunningham came along.

It is.
Technically, every new offensive ploy is a "fad" because the defensive coordinators have to design a scheme to stop it if they want to keep their jobs.

Not so much intent to injure as make 'em quit. If you run a play that makes the QB fair game, then defenses should take advantage of it. That will discourage teams from running that play, thereby shrinking the playbook and taking some of the guesswork out of defense.

Throwing under pressure is what gets you hurt as a QB. Not running the ball
This.
Take Big Ben for example. He is one of the best at extending plays and evading defenders.
He has never gotten hurt while outside the pocket.
Every time hes been hurt and had to sit a few weeks was because of hits hes taken inside the pocket.

All this same stuff was said about Randall Cunningham back in the late 80's early 90's. He was going to get hurt running around. Notice its always defensive guys that say that. Amnyway, he did get hurt, just like Tom Brady, standing in the pocket, throwing a pass.

Then that's one less presumably athletic defender in coverage. In today's league with how good the TEs/slot WRs are and versatile the backs are in the receiving game, that's not a fix. That's an invite to get your arse beaten through the air, which this crop can actually do.
Speaking for Kaep, whenever he runs a read-option play he's in the pistol and defenders aren't anywhere near hitting him, so unless people want to get fined he's under no real threat of taking hits. When he's in the open field he gets down before hits, as RGIII certainly will from now on.
I'm starting to think some of you don't actually watch the games.

In the Green Bay game, he ran straight into the defender, got his shite rocked, came up and screamed, and got a taunting penalty. Dumb shite like that can get him injured.

They are thinking RGIII is running the triple option on the boundaries like Tommy Frazier or Eric Crouch. The pitch option on the boundary is a once or twice a game gadget play in the NFL. Most of the yards that alfred morris/gore/lynch get are quick hitters right up the gut.
• start dropping guys and spying, the ball is over your head.
• bring safeties up to contain the run and play man, the ball is over your head.
• play a straight defense, these tough interior running backs will avg 5+ yards a carry.
• blitz, these qbs are smart and get rid of the ball quick with short hitches, slants, screens, and fades.
• collapse the ends on the rb, (RGIII, Newton, Wilson, and Kaep) are running away from your linebacker outside untouched for first downs and touchdowns.
The way to defend is to take the big play away, make the offense nickel and dime their way down the field, and win in the red zone (with the compressed field).
As for hitting the qb, you can't nail Romo after he's handed the ball off on a delay/draw without a penalty and you won't get away with nailing Kaepernick when he's already handed the ball off to Gore.

Its been the same way since I was playing a hundred years ago. QB runs the option...hit him in the knees every play.

Yep. Qbs hurt in the pocket, WR hurt over the middle and water is wet.
Thanks for your contribution.

It'll be the new normal.
Don't why so many people think it's a "gimmick" or "fad" or will "go away."
They probably would have said the same about the forward pass in 1906.

You'll start seeing smaller, faster LBers that can keep up with these guys soon.

I would not go that far at all. Most teams will still have pocket QB's.
There have been very few QB's in NFL history who can be or have been a successful dual threat.
